As a BESS Project Engineer, you can expect to:

  • Lead and/or perform BESS engineering design (including arrangement, electrical plans and sections, grounding plan and details, raceway plan and details, lighting plan, and details, etc.) at MV voltage levels while adhering to prevailing standards, practices, procedures, and project/program requirements.
  • Lead and/or perform Protection and Control engineering design (including relaying one-lines, AC schematics, DC schematics, metering, SCADA systems, BESS communication/networking systems, station automation, station security, etc.) at LV and MV voltage levels while adhering to prevailing standards, practices, procedures, and project/program requirements.
  • Coordinate with system planning, studies, and relay settings teams performing overall BESS electrical models and coordination.
  • Understand client goals and constraints to provide effective leadership on solutions that bring these goals to reality
  • Work with switchgear, battery, inverter, generator, and other DER manufacturers to develop innovative designs and solutions. This will primarily include designing installations for low and medium voltages up to 35kV but will also include interconnections at higher voltages.
  • Coordinate with various interconnected utilities and complete interconnection applications.
  • Navigate legacy drawings, brownfield equipment, and incomplete information to provide the best plan, estimate, and design to achieve client objectives.
  • Effectively manage engineering subconsultants and construction partners.
  • Understand and apply industry standards, applicable state and federal safety codes, regulatory compliance requirements, and construction codes to projects.
  • Create equipment, material, construction, and testing and commissioning specifications.
  • Perform quality control (QC) reviews and lead QC review meetings on applicable engineering deliverables produced by junior staff, peers, and remote offices on small, medium, and large projects while adhering to the PDS quality management standard.
  • Provide technical oversight, direction, and support for project teams.
  • Assure proper documentation of project technical data.
  • Ensure and facilitate project team collaboration and communication across all disciplines and resolve design conflicts as needed. 
  • Coordinate with project managers to successfully deliver projects to our clients.
  • Function as client Point of Contact (P.O.C) and work directly with clients on project-related issues. 
  • Direct and/or participate in client meetings and job-site visits to collect and deliver design and engineering information.
  • Identify and resolve project-related issues while proactively communicating and collaborating with the client.
  • Perform evaluations of existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements and present findings and recommendations to our clients.
  • Complete conceptual design (one-line and general layout) to support project planning.
  • Prepare and review proposals, technical write-ups, and project approach documents for small, medium, and large projects. This includes preparing and reviewing comprehensive project scopes of work and accurate man-hour estimates.
  • Present and justify proposals, estimates, and technical write-ups to management for small, medium, and large projects.
  • Provide technical training to junior staff by preparing presentations and workshops and conducting one-on-one meetings to assist with their technical growth. 
  • Provide professional mentorship while setting and maintaining a positive professional example for the team and junior staff

What Sets You Apart (Background Qualifications):

  • Lead Position: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program with a focus on power and a minimum of eight (8+) years’ experience in the design and construction of storage/generation/high voltage substation projects
  • Knowledge of battery storage systems, microgrid systems, hybrid renewable-storage configurations, and/or grid-connected systems.
  • Understanding of SCADA controls architecture and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850)
  • Must bring design experience from one or more of the following areas – High Voltage Substation Protection & Control (P&C), or Substation Physical
  • Awareness & understanding of relevant industry standards and regulations (e.g., NEC, IEEE 1547, IEEE 1584)
  • Ability to create and guide others in the creation of relevant drawings including One Line Diagrams, Electrical Plans/Elevations, AC/DC Schematics, etc.
  • Familiarity with factory acceptance tests and on-site commissioning of power systems to ensure they meet performance and safety standards
  • Experience in submitting interconnection applications, and reviewing Utility studies which may include Detailed Studies, Facility Studies, and System Impact Studies
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Bluebeam
  • Experience working with developers and construction contractors
  • Ability to meet deadlines under high pressure situations
  • Team player who can work effectively in a team environment with an ability to deal with and lead a variety of individuals from various backgrounds
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to travel nationally up to 15% of the time

Pay Range:

Pay Range $107,900.00 - $195,050.00
