SHIFT/SCHEDULE

Shift: Full Time = 36 Weekly Hours - Day Shift

Shift Time: 7:00am - 7:30pm

This position will have scheduled shifts every other weekend.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the RN, the BHT II provides direct patient care and participates in maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu.  Assists licensed nursing staff by performing technical skills and assisting patients with activities of daily living on the unit.  Ability to execute all tasks contained in BHT I job description. Facilitate psych-educational groups, co-facilitate group psychotherapy assigned.

Essential Functions

Promotes and maintains a safe environment conducive to healing and health promotion.

Performs active milieu assessment while assigned to safety rounds.

Performs screening on admission related to services needed.

Identifies patient behaviors that contribute to development of a crisis; utilizes non-verbal and verbal techniques to de-escalate crisis situations.

Provides direct patient care and monitors ongoing status under the direction of the RN.

Observes and documents patient information pertinent to patient’s condition per policy.

Assists with ADL’s in a goal-directed manner consistent with the program and plan of care.

Assists with vital sign as assigned.  

Initiates and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients.

Facilitates the development of appropriate behaviors, self-expression, and social interaction.

Facilitates or co-facilitates groups as assigned and assists in the provision of education, social and recreational rehabilitative experiences for the patients. 

Identifies patient needs.

Provides input to the interdisciplinary treatment team. 

Adheres to the standards and policies of the Corporate Responsibility Program, including the duty to comply with applicable laws and regulations, and reports to designated Manager (or employer hotline) any suspected unethical, fraudulent, or unlawful acts or policies.

Demonstrates ethical, sound professional practices and personal accountability.  Acts in alignment with the mission and core values of Mercy Health.

Participates in administrative meetings and committees (staff meetings, quality improvement, patient satisfaction, employee engagement, etc.) to exchange information that relates to program updates, identify program barriers and anticipate future program needs in accordance with appropriate accreditation standards and within facility policies.

Participates in the supervision of clinical interns or students and/or volunteers, utilizing orientation, observation, record reviews, feedback and evaluations as required.

Participates in the safe management of the milieu, intervening effectively with patients who behave inappropriately or who are having coping difficulty, utilizing effective non-abusive crisis prevention/intervention techniques. 

Treats patients and families with empathy and respect.

Maintains effective working relationships with team members, (requires both flexibility and setting limits).

Performs work in accordance with the facility standards and policies regarding risk management, safety, infection control, etc.

Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

Develops annual personalized professional goals in conjunction with supervisor.

Seeks and participates in learning opportunities that meet personal and departmental goals.

Other duties as assigned by manager or director.

Minimum Education

Required Minimum Education: 2 years/Associate’s degree

Specialty/Major:  Related health field, plus 5 years’ experience

Preferred Education

4 years/Bachelor’s Degree

Specialty/Major: Related health field, no experience required if BA

Licensure/Certifications

Licensed or certified as required by appropriate state or national licensing board if applicable.

Basic Life Support certification is Required

Preferred:  5 plus years of mental health experience

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Years and Type of Experience:  5 years’ experience in mental health

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:  De-escalation training within 90 days of hire

Group facilitation experience a plus

This position requires the incumbent to demonstrate proficiency in clinical skills for patients in the following age categories:

Adolescent, 13-17 years

Adult, 18-64 years

Geriatric, 65 years and older
