Department: Dining Services  Supervisor: Dining Services General Manager

GENERAL DESCRIPTION 

Reporting to the on-site Dining Services General Manager, this position is responsible for taking orders for coffee-espresso drinks and related food and beverage items. Processes payment transactions for orders, maintain par stocks, and ensure proper presentation of food and beverages including the accuracy of all assembled orders, and rotating product for maximum quality. Handle food and beverages according to HACCP guidelines and standard quality food service operation. Adhere to standard recipes and plating/portion guidelines. Oversee the café in the absence of the supervisor.

This is a bargaining unit position. Union dues are required.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains accurate production pars and inventories in the customer service and merchandising areas.
  • Assists with placing sundries orders for the café in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Prepares drink orders for customers and catering using standard measures and recipes.
  • Completes production and par lists, pre-meal checklists, requisitioning and waste lists.
  • Enters orders accurately into the Point of Sales device, accepts cash and charge payments. 

    Accurately makes change and follows standard procedures for making refunds and documents why refunds are being made on transaction receipts.

  • Responsible for all assigned change funds and cash receipts ensuring that the cash drawer is in compliance with overage/shortage standards.
  • Reconciles cash bank on cashier worksheet legibly and attaches all cancelled transactions and refunds with documented explanations.
  • Maintains organization and cleanliness of service area, merchandising areas, storage areas, and all equipment throughout the day
  • Assists in restocking condiments, beverages and general supplies.
  •  Leads the café in the absence of the café supervisor.

Food Safety/Sanitation

  • Responsible for ensuring proper presentation, portion control, and maintenance of serving temperatures following Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards.
  • Maintains sanitation and orderliness of all equipment, supplies and utensils within work area.
  • Handles food items appropriately during preparation.
  • Ensures proper food and drink preparation by utilizing approved recipes and following prescribed production standards.
  • Keeps display equipment clean and free of debris throughout the shift.
  • Cleans workstation thoroughly before leaving the area for other assignments.
  • Assists with cleaning of café and patio, removal of all trash, return of soiled linens to McConnell kitchen hampers, and preparation for scheduled pest elimination services.

Customer Service

  • Represents the College in a courteous, efficient, and friendly manner in all customer and employee interactions.
  • Interact with customers in a manner to ensure their satisfaction and resolve their complaints in a friendly and service-oriented manner, notifying the manager on duty appropriately.
  • Serves customers quickly and in proper portions; does not allow back-ups or snags in serving lines.
  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of daily menu items and explains the same to customers.
  • Relays relevant comments from customers directly to supervisors.
  • Consistently keeps up with peak cafe hours and does so calmly, accurately and efficiently.
  • Ensures that all display foods are merchandised and served neatly and attractively per management.

Other Duties

  • Inform supervisor in a timely manner when supplies are low.
  • Maintains professional appearance at all times, clean and well-groomed in accordance with College, department policies, and health code standards.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by management and supervisor due to operational needs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ability to take the lead responsibility for café operations in the absence of the Café supervisor/lead.
  • Ability to read, speak, comprehend and compose simple instructions, short correspondence and memos in English.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively and congenially communicate in one-on-one and small group situations with customers and co-workers.
  • Ability to do basic arithmetic; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to operate a cash register.
  • Ability to work quickly, safely and with a professional attitude during peak service hours.
  • Must be a strong team player with the ability to work well with a diverse community of customers, co-workers, and managers.
  • Must wear uniform and safety shoes, as well as hair restraints. Uniforms and shoes will be provided. No acrylic nails.
  • Ensure Department and OSHA safety standards are followed. Follow principles of sanitation and safety in handling food and equipment.

Education: High school graduation or G.E.D.; or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.

Experience: At least one year of full-time barista experience. 

Licenses/Certifications: Must have a valid California Food Handler’s Permit.

Supervisory Responsibility: No

Time Type: Full-time up to 40 hours per week

Annual Pay Schedule: 10-month

Work Hours: The regular hours for this hourly position are assigned in shifts of 40 hours between Saturday to Friday, 6:00am to 11:45pm when classes are in session; generally closing for approximately one to two weeks at three times throughout the year in December/January, May and August. During café closures, work is available by signed agreement in other departments and is generally offered for daytime periods but may include evenings and weekends. Work schedules may vary due to the needs of the College or department. Schedules are not guaranteed.

Work Model: On-Campus

Compensation: Union contract rate of pay $26.18 per hour

Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, stretch, lift up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level without assistance, and be able to work on feet for prolonged periods of time. Must have manual ability and dexterity to grasp, grip, safely operate cash register, espresso machine and other café equipment, as well as serve food and beverages.
