Azure Platform Engineer, Assistant Vice President

Quincy, Massachusetts Full time

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an experienced Azure Platform Engineer with a strong engineering background to join our Platform Engineering team in the Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE). In this position, you will play an important role in designing, building, managing, and enhancing Azure platform capabilities to support secure, compliant, and scalable workloads across State Street.

You will be instrumental in building the Azure foundation by establishing platform standards, reusable infrastructure patterns, and automation-focused solutions that meet enterprise security, governance, and regulatory needs. This role requires a strong engineering mindset, deep understanding of Azure cloud concepts, and hands-on experience in delivering production-grade platform solutions using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

The ideal candidate is a problem solver and platform builder, someone who is passionate about cloud engineering, embraces automation, and thrives in a collaborative environment where innovation, reliability, and security are paramount.

What you will be responsible for

As an Azure Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and operating secure, scalable, and resilient Azure platform capabilities that enable application teams to deploy and operate workloads confidently within State Street’s cloud ecosystem.

Your responsibilities will span platform architecture, service enablement, automation, operations, and collaboration, with a strong focus on engineering excellence and cloud best practices.

Platform Design & Engineering

  • Design and implement robust, scalable, and secure Azure infrastructure solutions aligned with enterprise security, governance, and resiliency standards.
  • Partner closely with platform architects to define component responsibilities, drive platform evolution, and ensure platform services meet current and future business needs.
  • Leverage native Azure services to meet the firm’s performance, availability, resiliency, and regulatory requirements.

Azure Service Enablement & Governance

  • Enable Azure services and platform capabilities based on use‑case‑driven requirements, ensuring standardized, compliant, and reusable implementations.
  • Drive identity, access management, configuration management, and monitoring strategies across the Azure platform.
  • Ensure platform designs adhere to security-by-design and least-privilege principles.

Infrastructure as Code & Automation

  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and scripting languages to automate deployment of Azure resource stacks and configurations.
  • Create automation solutions across all phases of the SDLC, including provisioning, configuration, validation, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
  • Continuously improve platform automation to enhance reliability, repeatability, and operational efficiency.

Collaboration & Workload Enablement

  • Collaborate closely with software development leads and application teams to understand workload requirements and guide them on optimal use of Azure services.
  • Provide architectural guidance to help teams optimize for performance, cost efficiency, scalability, and architectural flexibility.
  • Work with software testers and quality engineers to ensure the platform supports both automated and manual testing needs.

Operations, Monitoring & Support

  • Monitor platform health and proactively troubleshoot and resolve issues identified through monitoring tools and enterprise ticketing systems.
  • Ensure issues are fully documented, including root cause analysis, actions taken, and clear resolution steps.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of operational processes, observability, and platform reliability.

Continuous Improvement

  • Actively contribute to the continuous evolution of the Azure platform, driving improvements in architecture, automation, security, governance, and operational excellence.
  • Identify opportunities to standardize, simplify, and modernize Azure platform components, reusable modules, and service enablement patterns.
  • Continuously enhance Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, and operational tooling to improve deployment consistency, reliability, and speed.
  • Leverage operational insights, monitoring data, and incident learnings to strengthen platform resiliency, observability, and self‑healing capabilities.
  • Stay current with Azure service innovations, cloud-native patterns, and industry best practices, and proactively assess their applicability to the enterprise platform.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of platform standards, reference architectures, guardrails, and engineering best practices within the Cloud Center of Excellence.
  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence, automation-first thinking, and continuous learning within the Azure Platform Engineering team.
  • Support ongoing efforts to improve developer experience, cost optimization, and platform scalability, enabling application teams to move faster while remaining secure and compliant.

What we value

The following skills and attributes will help you succeed and thrive in this role:

  • Strong hands-on experience with Azure IaaS in enterprise-scale environments, enabling secure, compliant, and scalable cloud platforms.
  • An automation-first, engineering mindset, with a passion for building repeatable, reliable, and resilient solutions rather than manual processes.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering hybrid solutions across on‑premises and cloud environments for large, complex enterprises.
  • Deep understanding of cloud-native architecture patterns, platform design principles, and DevOps practices, with a strong emphasis on Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Ability to apply IaC principles (Terraform) to standardize deployments, enforce governance, and improve operational efficiency.
  • A strong learning mindset with the openness and ability to quickly adopt new technologies, tools, and cloud services in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Self-motivated and passionate team player who takes ownership, demonstrates accountability, and consistently drives work to completion.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate ideas, collaborate across teams, and proactively escalate risks or issues in a timely and constructive manner.
