The Assistant Vice President, Tax position is responsible for overseeing the Company’s Federal, State and local Tax function, including strategy, tax accounting, compliance, planning, audit management and tax-risk governance.  The AVP is responsible for leading, recruiting, supervising, developing and mentoring the Tax team.  The AVP will be an essential business partner and leader across the CarMax organization, provide tax expertise to the organization and provide advisory services to senior management of the Company.  This role reports to the Chief Accounting Officer & Controller.

  

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES   

  • Lead and direct day-to-day tax operations to ensure accuracy, compliance and timeliness of tax filings and reports in all jurisdictions for all income, franchise, sales & use, and business personal property taxes.  Oversee preparation and review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions in accordance with ASC 740, including deferred tax analysis, uncertain tax positions and accurate financial statement disclosures.
  • Lead, mentor and develop a high performing team of associates through timely performance feedback delivered during day-to-day observations, file reviews and annual performance reviews.  Create individual development plans and business objectives designed to enhance and assist associate growth.
  • Present complex tax issues, effective tax rate forecasts and strategies to senior management.
  • Ensure tax methods are established, executed, documented and disclosed with the objective of minimizing tax risk.  This includes staying current on legislative developments, evaluating impacts on the Company, and implementation of new tax laws and regulations.
  • Provide tax due diligence, structuring, and integration support for acquisitions, divestitures, and restructuring.  Analyze and communicate tax implications of new business initiatives, including new store openings, operational changes and strategic investments.
  • Ensure compliance with tax-related internal controls over financial reporting / Sarbanes-Oxley 404.  Act as a key liaison with external auditors for tax matters.
  • Identify opportunities for tax savings, improved tax efficiency and cash flow optimization.
  • Oversee tax audits, lead negotiations and issue analysis with tax authorities, working with external advisors and legal counsel to resolve issues and ensure favorable outcomes.
  • Serve as a stakeholder and participant in the enhancements to financial ERP system, automation solutions and other strategic technology projects, such as ERO / Modernization.
  • Partner with key internal stakeholders, including Corporate Accounting, Financial Reporting, Financial Planning and Analysis, Investor Relations, Legal and Treasury, Real Estate, and Explore New Growth, to provide tax insights and guidance on various business initiatives and ensure that tax considerations are integrated into financial reporting, corporate governance and strategic decision-making.
  • Serve as a key partner in developing and maintaining the strategic vision for the Accounting Department collaboratively with other senior leaders of the department.
  • Responsible for attracting, retaining talented associates, and creating effective succession plans in collaboration with other senior accounting leaders.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • Fifteen plus years of progressively responsible tax experience including experience in both public accounting and in-house experience at a publicly traded company
  • CPA, JD, LLM or Master’s degree strongly preferred
  • Advance knowledge of ASC 740 and US federal and state tax concepts
  • Expertise in corporate tax technology systems
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the CarMax Home Office in Richmond, VA and Associates will work onsite 4 days per week.
