Job Description

The Role

Working with the VP, Protection Pricing, Australia and alongside the AVP, Individual Protection Pricing, Australia and Manager, Group Protection, this role will be responsible for managing the pricing of group risk business written in Australia by Pacific Life Re Australia (“PL Re Aus”). This includes Death, TPD, and IP (a.k.a. GSC) business written via superannuation, mastertrust, or similar distribution channels.

You will oversee a team of pricing actuaries and analysts that manage PL Re’s group-sold product treaties and the pricing for new group-sold reinsurance opportunities. Working with the valuation and R&D teams, you will help set analytics plans and influence the assumptions used in policy liability calculations for those portfolios.

You will also be responsible for other pricing projects that arise over time. This includes maintenance of the non-decrement Terms of Trade (i.e. pricing approach and methodology for non-decrement assumptions) used across the pricing team. Other projects could involve supporting the Retail-sold new business quotes, supporting global protection pricing teams and global process redesign projects, or supporting internal pricing basis developments.

In your AVP role, you will need to work collaboratively with members from other functional teams to execute and influence the business’s strategic goals and to ensure business processes run smoothly. This includes business development, R&D, underwriting, claims, risk, and back-office teams. As part of a global line of business, you’ll also engage with members from the pricing teams in our Singapore, London, and North American offices.

Working with the Pricing Managers in your team and PL Re’s Client Solutions team, you will maintain relationships with pricing counterparts at current and prospective clients to understand our client’s needs and build effective partnerships. You will expand our external market presence, and help execute our strategic initiatives.

AVP Pricing Responsibilities

  • Delivery of Pricing reinsurance terms, with strong leadership skills and resource management
  • A visible contributor to the wider Business Unit, ensuring good proactive collaboration with key Teams (marketing, R&D, claims, underwriting, risk, and back-office teams)
  • Leads robust challenge to assumptions, processes and strategy within Pricing and around the Company ensuring that everyone has a voice and discussions are organized to reach consensus
  • Develops and motivates top talent, supporting the building of an engaged, empowered and market-leading team
  • Supports the oversight of cutting-edge innovative solutions, ensuring evolution of Pricing practices in a competitive market
  • Develops relationships with key client contacts to ensure PL Re is viewed as knowledge, respected and collaborative reinsurance partner
  • Very strong communication and presentational skills, including to senior stakeholders, with one of the key responsibilities to achieve reinsurance pricing approval
  • Supports the VP in developing and delivering the Pricing strategy which is in line with the strategy of PL Re and the relevant Business Unit
  • Ability to give confidence to the wider organisation in the capability and judgment of the Pricing function
  • Cultivates a healthy risk culture within the function, acting as a subject matter expert for the Pricing function, the markets that the business operates in and the risks to which it is exposed

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • FIAA or equivalent status.
  • 10+ years’ experience in roles involving actuarial pricing or related functions
  • Excellent understanding of actuarial principles and processes
  • Strong knowledge of Australian market landscape
  • Excellent technical, analytical and communication skills
  • Significant management experience
  • Ability to work independently and lead others and liaise with multiple stakeholders at all levels of the business

Desirable:

  • Previous work history based in life insurance, particularly group risk portfolios (distribution, pricing, product management)
  • Good working knowledge of the Australian market for both Group and Retail business, including product terms and pricing approaches
  • Change management and/or process improvement experience/credentials
  • Experience in systems such as SQL, Tableau, and R and strong Excel/VBA skills
  • Experience/knowledge of actuarial techniques such as Generalised Linear Models, Survival Models, stochastic models, and other machine learning techniques
  • Strong mentoring skills to develop and train junior members of the team
  • Project management skills
