Job Summary: This position is located at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.

Major Duties:

  • The incumbent performs duties to ensure equipment is serviced and available for field staff to efficiently and safely carry out daily internment and ground maintenance. Typical duties include but are not limited to: completed repairs and maintenance, in accordance with diagrams, operations manuals, and manufacturers specifications of vehicles, machinery and mechanical equipment such as cars, trucks, vans, tractors, backhoes, mini-excavators, pneumatic tools, compressors, mowers, edgers, trimmers, sod cutters, pressure washers, sprayers, pumps, snow equipment and other equipment at the cemetery. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,12/10/2025. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to perform maintenance and repairs on automotive, engineering, and groundskeeping equipment, as well as conduct preventive maintenance on facilities and infrastructure. Evidence of this potential can be shown through work, training, or relevant activities that indicate the potential to perform these duties effectively. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: This position requires frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds and occasionally moving heavy items with assistance that are over fifty (50) pounds. Must have a full range of upper and lower body movement to work in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions. Moderate effort is required in operating vehicles and tools of the trade. Heavy effort is required in major overhauls and extensive welding operation. Stamina, dexterity, and perseverance are required in all aspects of duties. Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in a well-lit and ventilated shop with concrete floors. Subject to cuts, bruises, mashed fingers and loud noises. Mechanical duties are generally dirty and greasy. On occasion, may be required to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. There is always the possibility of injury from accidents or failure of equipment. Will be exposed to vibrations, jolts, heat, cold, rain, dust and fumes from chemicals and fuel. To reduce dangers and irritations from these conditions, prescribed safety practices and use of PPE is required. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
