PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring Salary: $15.16 - $17.73/hour

OVERVIEW OF JOB

Aurora Water offers an exciting opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the water and environmental sector through the Community Engagement & Outreach Internship. This position provides a unique introduction to the world of water utilities, environmental stewardship, and public engagement—fields that are increasingly critical to the future of communities across the western United States.

As an intern, you will help Aurora Water connect with the community on important topics such as water conservation, water quality, drought preparedness, and the long‑term sustainability of our water supplies. You will represent Aurora Water at community events, assist with educational outreach programs, and help residents better understand the value of water and the role they can play in protecting this essential resource.

This internship provides practical experience in public engagement, environmental education, and communications while working alongside professionals in one of Colorado’s leading water utilities. It is an excellent opportunity for students interested in environmental science, communications, public policy, sustainability, education, or public service to explore careers in the water sector.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Represent Aurora Water at community events by supporting educational displays, activities, and outreach materials.
  • Engage with community members to share information about water conservation, water quality, and Aurora Water programs.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of outreach materials, displays, and engagement tools used at community events.
  • Support research on best practices for community engagement and environmental education.
  • Help organize and prepare materials and equipment for outreach events and educational activities.
  • Assist Aurora Water staff with community engagement initiatives, including workshops, presentations, and public events.
  • Develop a small project, tool, or display that supports Aurora Water’s community engagement and water education efforts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED with current enrollment in a college or university program or recent graduate (within 6 months) with coursework related to conservation, environmental science, physical sciences, communications, journalism, public relations, policy or education. Students currently enrolled in a 2-year or technical program will also be considered.

Experience:

  • Customer service and/or event tabling experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of conservation, water quality, as well as Colorado and western water issues
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Skills:

  • Customer service, interpersonal communication, and collaboration skills
  • Problem solving skills

Abilities:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees
  • Communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing
  • Represent Aurora Water in a personable and friendly manner
  • Organize materials and equipment to accomplish tasks and set up displays


Licenses and/or Certificates:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a city vehicle, or otherwise demonstrate ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position

WORKING CONDITIONS  

Essential Personnel: 

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently performs light physical work that involves moving no more than 20 pounds at a time with or without assistance
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling
  • Infrequently performs moderate physical work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds at a time with or without assistance
  • Hand-eye and hand-foot coordination for operation of a vehicle
  • Vision to read manuals; speech communication to communicate with employees and customers
  • Hearing/listening for communication with customers
  • Speech communication to provide technical information and communicate with employees and customers

Work Environment:

  • Mix of office work and outdoor work with potential exposure to all weather conditions, noise, dust, fumes, and animals including stinging insects

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including tablet, laptop, and common software such as email, internet, Word, and Excel
  • This role may require the use of personal equipment (e.g. cell phone) in the course of employment

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
