Tomorrow

Atmospheric Data Engineer

Golden, Colorado, United States Full Time

The R&D Team at Tomorrow.io is a dynamic mix of scientists and engineers. Our mission is to generate the best and most novel data and models across all times: historical, real-time, and forecast. The story just begins when the data hits our ingest and post-processing services. Every product that the user sees is the result of a pipeline of algorithms that needs to be run quickly and continuously, in an operational environment. We are the team that builds the architecture behind the data and the models, preparing the weather analyses for the Product and Engineering team to serve our large and diverse customer base.

We are seeking an Atmospheric Data Engineer with experience in satellite science data processing systems to join our team of scientists and engineers building and operating the world’s first and largest commercial constellation of precipitation radars and microwave sounders. In this role, you will be responsible for pipeline development, maintenance, and monitoring; science code reviews (development will be led by instrument scientists); data delivery to internal and external customers; cloud compute resource management, and data storage architecture.

What you’ll do:

  • Take a lead role in optimizing and maintaining the pipeline architecture for all Tomorrow.io satellite data products
  • Engineer cloud-optimized workflows to store and rapidly reprocess our satellite data when algorithms are upgraded
  • Develop tools to closely monitor the data feeds for anomalies or outages
  • Be a first responder when incidents occur (alerting customers; triaging the underlying issue)
  • Work with the instrument science team to improve quality monitoring and provide feedback for future software and hardware upgrades

What you’ll bring:

  • Graduate degree in atmospheric science, computer science or a related field
  • Knowledge of satellite meteorology (particularly passive microwave and/or precipitation radar level 1 and level 2 products) is a strong plus
  • At least 3 years of professional (post-graduate) experience working with modern cloud computing architectures for scientific data processing
  • Demonstrated experience with the best practices in satellite data processing algorithm development, testing, reviewing, documenting
  • Experience working with cloud-based environments and services (e.g., GCP, AWS, Azure) including knowledge of pricing structures and cost optimization best practices
  • Demonstrated experience working with common meteorological data formats (e.g., BUFR, NetCDF, etc) and cloud-native formats (e.g., zarr)
  • Strong communication skills:  Including presenting and distilling complex topics and findings to collaborators and stakeholders of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on cross-disciplinary teams, prioritize competing efforts, and deliver on schedule and budget

So, if you're looking to join a team that is not only at the forefront of innovation but also working towards building the biggest weather platform in the world, powered by the world’s first rapid-revisit microwave sounder constellation, this is the place for you! If your experience is close but only fulfills some requirements, please apply. Tomorrow.io is on a mission to build a special company.
