Tarleton State University is a Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Athletics Academic Coordinator supports student-athletes across multiple sport programs, including Football, and reports to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics. The position works closely with campus partners such as Compliance, the Assistant Registrar, Academic Advising, and other university offices as appropriate. Core responsibilities include maintaining accurate academic records and files, monitoring academic progress and NCAA eligibility in accordance with grade reports, and meeting with current and prospective student-athletes to review academic requirements. The Athletics Academic Coordinator provides academic mentoring and coordinates tutoring and study hall programs, requiring consistent and open communication with coaches and athletic department staff, along with a thorough understanding of NCAA, UAC, and University rules, guidelines, and regulations. The position also serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

The Athletics Academic Coordinator is expected to work a full-time schedule primarily during standard business hours; however, due to the nature of Division I athletics, this position requires flexibility. Evening and weekend hours are frequently necessary to support student-athletes through study halls, tutoring sessions, recruiting activities, team travel, competitions, and peak academic periods such as registration, midterms, and finals. Occasional travel may also be required.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Serve as the coordinator to assigned teams; monitor their academic progress; while also connecting student-athletes to professional development resources. Team assignments will include assisting with Football, and another Olympic Sports. 

  • Administer and oversee study hall and tutorial programs for student-athletes; liaison with the Office of Student Success to coordinate tutors, and provide information as requested; utilize the Office of Student Success to develop strategies to assist at-risk student-athletes.

  • Supervise a Graduate Assistant to help manage tutoring program

  • Communicate with assigned coaching staff through scheduled academic meetings; regularly and promptly share detailed information regarding the ongoing academic progress of assigned student-athletes.

  • Serve as the academic representative to assigned teams for on-campus recruiting operations.

  • With a thorough understanding of NCAA legislation and continuing eligibility serve as the point of contact for monitoring and projecting student-athlete academic outcomes with assigned teams.

  • Monitor student-athletes’ NCAA academic eligibility using university student systems and established internal degree-tracking forms.

  • Promote positive working relationships with faculty. 

  • Prepare and distribute weekly reports to all coaches relative to academic performance, encompassing overall academic performance of team, evaluation of performance of at-risk student-athletes, and weekly student hall and tutoring hours.

  • Support department and campus-wide student success efforts through participation in a variety of department activities and committee work

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years experience working in academic advising, teaching, counseling, student affairs, or a related field

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • NCAA Compliance & Ethics:
    Thorough knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility, recruiting, continuing-eligibility, progress-toward-degree, transfer legislation, and Academic Progress Rates (APR), with a demonstrated commitment to the Honor System and full compliance with all NCAA rules, regulations, and principles.

  • Academic Advising & Curriculum Analysis:
    Demonstrated success providing academic advising and/or academic support, including the ability to analyze course prerequisites, certification requirements, and curriculum/graduation pathways to effectively support and advocate for diverse student populations.

  • Communication & Interpersonal Effectiveness:
    Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and responsively with students, faculty, administrators, athletic coaches and staff, and community partners.

  • Confidentiality, Judgment & Problem Solving:
    Ability to analyze and solve problems using sound independent judgment while managing, handling, and appropriately imparting sensitive and confidential information.

  • Organization, Multitasking & Stakeholder Management:
    Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize competing responsibilities, and maintain strong organizational skills and attention to detail while collaborating with others, managing multiple constituencies, and advocating for students with professionalism and political acumen.

  • Technology Proficiency:
    Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications, as well as experience using higher education and student information systems and technologies (e.g., Canvas, ARMS, Banner).

  • Flexibility & Availability:
    Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, with willingness to travel as required.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Salary Range:

The target base annual salary range is $41,000 up to $50,761 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
