The Career Development office is a division of the College of Arts & Sciences Student Services & Admissions Office and a member of the Cornell Career Network. The College of Arts & Sciences has 4,500+ undergraduate students, representing different backgrounds and cultures from across the U.S. and the world. Career Development serves all undergraduate students, as well as recent graduates up to 5 years after graduation, on all career related topics including internship/job search strategies, graduate and professional school admission, major and career exploration, interviewing, and job offer negotiation. Our very busy office serves ~2,000 unique students each year through individual appointments, workshops, and events.

University Career Development offers an array of career-development activities that inspire students to gain confidence and establish a foundation upon which to build their careers over a lifetime. Employer engagement is a critical, cross-campus effort. We work with our campus colleagues to help our employer partners develop successful strategies for identifying and recruiting talent from Cornell.

The Assistant Director, Employer and Academic Engagement in the College of Arts & Sciences focuses on three areas: employer relations, academic initiatives, and student career advising.

Employer Relations:
Serves as an Employer Relations (ER) Manager who builds and maintains partnerships with employers recruiting at Cornell. The role collaborates with the Cornell Career Network and other ER Managers to support a “One Cornell” strategy, manage an employer portfolio, coordinate recruitment opportunities, track engagement through CRM systems, and liaise with the LAUNCH consortium to organize virtual interview days. The goal is to increase job postings, recruitment, and hiring of Cornell students and recent graduates.

Academic Initiatives:
Helps develop and co-teach an undergraduate professional development course beginning Spring 2027. Responsibilities include setting learning outcomes, organizing employer site visits in New York City during spring break, managing logistics, teaching career development lessons, and integrating career development and employer engagement into academic programs. The role also creates workshops, collaborates with faculty and employers, and supports student organizations involved in recruiting partnerships.

Career Coaching and Advising:
Provides career guidance to students on job and internship searches, application materials, interviews, job offers, and salary negotiation. Conducts practice interviews and reviews applications for the Arts & Sciences Summer Experience Grant.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of experience in career and/or student services, recruitment/HR or other industry experience.
  • High level of interpersonal skills, including experience maintaining positive relationships with various constituencies, such as students, employers, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Excellent customer-service and communications skills.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for collaborating with various stakeholders in a professional setting.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to manage logistics of event management.
  • Must be able to work independently, as member of team, under pressure, and in a complex environment.
  • Proficient in computer software and web application skills.
  • Professional, diplomatic demeanor required to interact with current/prospective students, parents, alumni, employers, staff, faculty, and other constituents with diplomacy and tact.
  • Commitment to/understanding of the liberal arts and sciences mission, and how to assist students in utilizing their education/skills in obtaining their career goals.
  • Strong coaching, presentation, teamwork, and collaboration.
  • Accurate spelling, grammar, writing, and editorial skills in order to review students’ application materials.
  • Reasoning and critical thinking.
  • Proactive and “can do” attitude.
  • Ability to understand the needs of high achieving Ivy League students, and counsel students regarding stress management.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office programs, Internet, web site development, and email.
  • Experience in a professional office environment.
  • Strong background in collaborating as a team player and in maintaining tact, professionalism, and a sense of humor in stressful situations.
  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities. 
  • Ability to advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds. 
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in employer relations in a higher education setting; and/or experience as a university recruiter.
  • Experience working with colleagues across units on a highly collaborative team to achieve institutional goals.
  • Experience with Salesforce as a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform.
  • Experience with a campus recruiting platform, such as Handshake.
