Markel is seeking an Associate Underwriter to join our Environmental & Energy underwriting team. In this role, you will serve as an integral resource within the team, supporting day-to-day underwriting operations and client servicing. You will help ensure accurate risk classifications, exposure rates, and premium calculations while reinforcing the ease of doing business with Markel by consistently meeting or exceeding agent and broker expectations. Over time, you will develop the skills to independently review, analyze, accept, and decline risks to ensure profitability for Markel.This role offers meaningful opportunities for professional growth. You will develop skills to independently review, analyze, accept, and decline risks, and learn to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner according to established guidelines.

What you'll be doing:

  • Work within the underwriting team to provide operational and administrative support, including determining accurate risk classifications, exposure rates, premium calculations, and processing of underwriting files. Routinely communicate with team members, agents, brokers, and other key business partners to research and gather information needed to review, analyze, and complete transactions. Maintain a suspense and follow-up system for outstanding underwriting items.
  • Serve as a point of contact for agents and brokers by gathering information on behalf of underwriters, answering questions, resolving issues, facilitating overall servicing of Environmental & Energy accounts, and processing business transactions.
  • Assist the underwriting team in pricing new and renewal accounts in accordance with business strategies; work renewal accounts independently with underwriter oversight and approval.
  • Ensure accuracy of information entered into all appropriate systems and verify that all necessary documentation is in the underwriting file.
  • Utilize and adhere to internal guidelines, procedures, and service standards to ensure that all assigned work and transactions are processed in a timely and accurate manner and meet compliance standards.
  • Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal requirements, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of coverage forms, policy language, and the appropriate use of forms and exclusions. Under Underwriter direction, attach appropriate forms and make policy changes as requested.
  • Participate in audits and underwriting meetings as required.
  • Participate in special projects and take on other duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the team, customer needs are met, and business results are achieved.

What we're looking for:

  • Prior underwriting support and/or underwriting experience.
  • College degree and/or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, and Adobe; comfortable working in multiple systems.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team; self-directed and highly productive.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to follow processes and maintain accuracy.

Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Associate Underwriter position is $27.84 - $38.27/hour with 15% incentive.
