GTB is comprised of three business lines: Trade & Working Capital ("TWC"), Corporate Cash Management ("CCM"), and Financial Institutions ("FI"). TWC is made up of Global Core Trade Finance ("GCTF") and Structured Trade & Export Finance ("STEF"), which is comprised of Export & Agency ("EAF") Finance and Working Capital Solutions ("WCS").

Working Capital Solutions:

  • Helps companies optimize cash flow cycles, reduce funding gaps, and improve financial stability, enabling growth and operational efficiency.
  • Develops client centric solutions to help them manage short-term liquidity needs via trade payable (Supply Chain Finance, Reverse Factoring / Forfaiting) and trade receivable financing (Factoring / Forfaiting).
  • Clients principally include Fortune 500 companies with head offices located in North America and Europe.
  • Works closely with internal TD internal partners to provide "One-TD" solutions to our clients.

Job Description:

This role is an early-career entry point to a client coverage focused career in an origination unit of Corporate and Investment Banking. We are seeking a candidate with the capability to add value today, and with the potential for a long-term career within our team. The Associate will support WCS Relationship Managers ("RMs") and will provide client management functions.  We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a deep intellectual curiosity, a passion for corporate finance and technology, and outstanding interpersonal skills/EQ.

The Associate role will require regular interaction with clients and internal partners: however, there is a large body of specific product information that can only be learned on the job.  Productive client interactions require a solid understanding of our products and how we can put forth solutions to our clients.  It is essential that the successful candidate be capable of finding ways to autonomously drive learning and take a degree of responsibility / ownership for development by proactively seeking out opportunities for learning and improvement.

Our clients may have global footprints but are mostly located in the U.S., Europe, and Canada. Progression within the team will gradually require some travel to meet and build relationships with clients and team members. 

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Support Working Capital Solutions Origination

  • The Associate is an integral member of a client-focused origination team and will support RMs to meet client requirements, identify new business opportunities, and assist in execution of the WCS strategy.
  • Reporting to the Director – Structured Trade & Export Finance in [Toronto/New York], the Associate will help develop business with a portfolio of corporate clients across multiple sectors, as well as provide direct client management functions.
  • Proactively identify and originate Working Capital Solutions opportunities including Trade Receivables and Trade Payables Finance along with the senior WCS RMs and the corporate and investment banking RMs.
  • Contribute to the design, development, implementation and running of working capital analysis models and sectorial research to support commercial efforts.
  • Run profitability analysis, draft business opportunity memorandums.
  • Keep an organized tracking of the origination activity with adequate reporting.
  • Identify opportunities for cross-sell GTB products, and collaborating with GTB colleagues to pursue the opportunity.
  • Contribute to product development initiatives, identification of incremental sales opportunities.
  • Review financial statements and leverage credit tools to understand clients' requirements.
  • Become familiar with TDS clients across industries such as: Automotives; Communications & Media; Consumer & Retail; Diversified Industrials; Energy & Energy Transition; Financial Institutions; Financial Sponsors; Healthcare; Mining & Metals; Real Estate; Technology.
  • Develop relationships with key internal business partners: CIB, GTB, Debt Capital Markets ("DCM"), Public Finance Bond Desk, Leveraged Finance, Asset Securitization, CIB Credit, Trade Finance / Credit Lending Operations.
  • Work closely with WCS colleagues in Toronto and New York.

Relationship Development

  • Structure solutions for clients along with WCS RM, negotiate terms with clients. Work with legal counsel on documentation.
  • Prepare presentations and discussion materials/term sheets.
  • Arrange / engage in client calls and preparation of call reports.
  • Collaborate with product partners including Asset Securitization, DCM, Derivatives, FX, Rates, ensuring appropriate presentation contribution.
  • Support deal communication with CIB relationship managers.

Assist in Closing New Business

  • Coordinate with other teams to ensure a seamless handling of deals, incl. Trade Finance Product, Trade Finance Operations, Risk, Legal etc.
  • Assist WCS RMs with review and negotiation of facility documentation with clients.

Job Requirements

  • Strong team player attitude is a must
  • Familiarity with corporate financial statements (understanding of credit analysis is considered an asset)
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Strong MS suite skills (PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote), and fluency in Gen AI and LLM technologies and tools
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • High level of self-motivation and initiative
  • Global financial market and political awareness
  • Excellent organization, collaboration, and prioritization skills to manage deliverables
  • Capability to manage continuous reporting and presentation requests

Profile:

  • Previous experience in Working Capital Solutions or equivalent is appreciated
  • Private Risk Insurance knowledge is a plus
  • CFA qualification is a plus

Depth & Scope:

The role will support two or more senior trade finance professionals located in New York to enhance client relationships and corporate origination efforts. Clients have global footprints but are mostly located in the United States and Europe. 

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Trade Finance Origination
    • Support senior originators to meet client needs and identify new trade finance opportunities
    • Understand the overall TDS client origination strategy, particularly that of CIB
  • Support activity to increase sales revenue by adding new clients and increasing the penetration rate of trade finance products and services
    • Become familiar with TDS clients across industries such as, but not limited to, Communication, Media, and Telecom; Diversified; Consumer Products; Industrials; and Power
    • Review credit tools and financials to understand clients' requirements
    • Develop relationships with key internal business partners: CIB, GTB, Debt Capital Markets ("DCM"), Global Markets Bond Desk
    • Manage NY deal pipeline via Customer Relationship Management ("CRM") tools – Salesforce and internal tracking
    • Work closely with GTF teams in Toronto and Vancouver
    • Conduct regular market reads to gauge risk-based market pricing
  • Pitch Involvement
    • Prepare pitch decks & term sheets
    • Arrange / engage in client calls and preparation of call reports
    • Assist in term sheet negotiation
    • Collaborate with product partners – Trade Finance Operations ("TFO"), DCM, Derivatives, FX, Rates, ensuring appropriate presentation contribution
    • Support deal communication with Investment Banking & Corporate Banking relationship managers
  • Assist in closing new business
    • As new business is awarded, facilitate all aspects of facility approval, including Know Your Customer ("KYC"), & instrument issuance
    • Assist Originator with review & negotiation of facility documentation with clients
    • Assist in execution of trade finance strategy

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2+ years of experience
  • Familiarity with financial statements and understanding of corporate credit analysis
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Strong presentation creation skills (PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
