Role Overview

A Software Tester in Quality Assurance is responsible for planning, executing, and documenting tests to ensure that software applications—especially data migrations and Power BI reports—meet defined requirements and quality standards. They help verify that data is moved and transformed correctly, reports and dashboards display accurate information, and application features behave as expected.

Key tasks include creating and executing test cases for data loads, SQL‑based validations, and Power BI reports; performing functional and regression testing; validating data accuracy; documenting defects; and participating in reviews with developers, data engineers, report developers, and business analysts. Software Testers play a crucial role in ensuring reliable, data‑driven solutions that support decision‑making and operational excellence across the organisation.

What will you do in this role

  • Review requirements, data mapping documents, and Power BI report specifications to understand expected system behaviour and identify test conditions.
  • Design, develop, and maintain test cases and test scenarios for data migrations (ETL/ELT jobs, database loads) and Power BI reports/dashboards.
  • Execute manual test cases including functional, integration, system, and regression testing to validate new features and changes.
  • Use SQL queries to:
    • Compare record counts between source and target databases.
    • Sample and validate key data fields after migration.
    • Verify data transformations and business rules against mapping documents.
  • Check for data truncation, missing values, incorrect formats, and referential integrity issues.
  • Log, track, and retest defects using standard defect‑tracking tools, providing clear, concise steps to reproduce, sample data, SQL snippets, and relevant evidence (screenshots, logs, exports).
  • Collaborate closely with:
    • Application developers,
    • Data engineers/DBAs, and
    • Power BI report developers and business analysts to clarify requirements, discuss defects, and ensure timely resolution.

Planning, documentation, and support

  • Participate in test planning and estimation activities as part of an agile or iterative delivery team.
  • Contribute to test data setup for different test scenarios, including preparing or identifying relevant SQL test data sets for migrations and reporting.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining test documentation, including test plans, test case repositories, SQL validation scripts, data validation checklists, and execution reports.
  • Support basic test automation or semi‑automation for data comparison (for example, re‑usable SQL scripts or simple tools) where applicable.
  • Work within a matrix organisational structure, reporting to both the functional manager and the project or product manager.
  • Participate in project planning, execution, and delivery, ensuring alignment with both functional and project goals.

What should you have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related Technology stream; or equivalent practical experience in software testing.
  • Around 1–3 years of experience in software testing or quality assurance (manual testing experience is sufficient; data and reporting exposure is a strong plus).
  • Basic understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and software testing life cycle (STLC).
  • Experience designing and executing test cases and documenting defects using common test management and defect‑tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Azure DevOps, or similar).
  • Familiarity with testing concepts such as functional testing, regression testing, integration testing, and user acceptance testing.

SQL and data skills

  • Hands‑on experience with basic SQL, including:
    • Writing simple SELECT queries with filters, joins, and basic aggregations.
    • Using SQL to validate counts, totals, and sample data between source and target systems.
  • Understanding of relational database concepts (tables, columns, keys, joins).

Power BI skills

  • Exposure to Power BI report and dashboard testing, such as:
    • Validating that visuals and KPIs reflect correct underlying data.
    • Testing filters, slicers, and interactions between visuals.
    • Reviewing Power BI data models at a basic level (tables, relationships) is a plus.
  • Exposure to working in agile environments and using agile‑related software tools.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Proven record of delivering high‑quality work with strong attention to detail, especially when validating data and numerical results.
  • Product and customer‑centric approach with a focus on usability, accuracy, and end‑user experience for reports and data outputs.
  • Innovative thinking and a learning mindset, with willingness to deepen SQL and Power BI skills and adopt new testing tools and practices over time.
