ABOUT THE ROLE

The Associate Professor will provide leadership and foster excellence in learning & teaching, research, and industry engagement efforts of the School, within the University, and with the community, professional, commercial, and industrial sectors. More specifically, the Associate Professor is responsible for providing original, innovative, and distinguished contributions to the School’s programs, particularly in the disciplines of computer science, information technology, software engineering and artificial intelligence, and for maintaining and advancing their scholarly, research, and/or professional capabilities relevant to those disciplines at a national and international level. The Associate Professor can be expected to provide strategic leadership in learning and teaching or research and scholarship, teach, and make a significant contribution to teaching and learning in the disciplines to improve student learning outcomes. The Associate Professor will significantly contribute to the School's planning and strategic direction, by taking on academic leadership roles involving participation in various committees within the School, Program Portfolio, and University and external to the University, as appropriate. This position will provide leadership and support for partnerships and engagement activities ensuring they are appropriately and successfully coordinated, implemented, and continuously improved. These activities will involve industry partners, Government agencies, and University stakeholders.

  • Reporting lines may be adjusted in line with organisational changes.

KEY ACCOUNTIBILITIES 

  • Teaching delivery and student experience: Undertake independent teaching at undergraduate, honours, postgraduate, and corporate training levels. Design, deliver and continuously improve learning activities that enhance student engagement, wellbeing, and employability, informed by student feedback and course/program evaluation.
  • Assessment design, moderation and academic standards: Design, conduct and moderate assessment in line with University policy and quality assurance requirements. Ensure assessment integrity, consistency of standards, and appropriate documentation, including moderation processes and continuous improvement actions.
  • Program and curriculum leadership: Lead the advancement of teaching within the disciplines, including developing new courses/programs, initiating program improvements, strengthening academic standards, and supporting accreditation and regulatory compliance.
  • Research leadership, impact and collaboration: Conduct impactful research and drive national and international contributions to the discipline. Build and lead interdisciplinary research teams; lead publication strategies and high-quality research outputs; develop and sustain collaborations with RMIT Melbourne and external partners; and support translation of research outcomes into practice, policy, industry or community impact.
  • Research funding: Identify, attract and secure external research funding to support sustained research growth.
  • HDR supervision and researcher development: Supervise and mentor HDR candidates and contribute to researcher development, including mentoring early career researchers and building capability within the discipline/research group.
  • Governance, service and external engagement: Contribute significantly to internal and external university governance and collegial life, including participation in committees, Industry Advisor Committee, academic leadership roles, recruitment/outreach activities, and engagement with relevant professional bodies and partners.
  • Alignment with academic expectations.
  • Other duties commensurate with the scope of the role.
  • Adhere to the requirements of the Academic Expectations and Development Framework of RMIT Vietnam.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Qualifications: PhD (or equivalent doctoral qualification) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • International research profile and quality outputs: An internationally recognised research profile aligned to at least one of the School of Science, Engineering & Technology research clusters: (1) AI in Health Informatics, (2) Community Health and Wellbeing, (3) Digital Innovation for Environmental and Societal Impact, (4) Emerging Technologies in Education, and (5) Semiconductors and Industry 4.0. Evidence of sustained, high-quality research outputs in discipline-relevant leading journals and conferences; research impact and recognition appropriate to Associate Professor level (e.g., citations, invited talks, awards, leadership roles); and scholarly service such as editorial and peer-review activities.
  • Research leadership and strategy: Demonstrated ability to lead research agendas and deliver outcomes, including establishing and nurturing interdisciplinary research teams, mentoring early-career researchers, setting a coherent 3-5 year research strategy aligned with School and University priorities, and contributing to national and international collaborations.
  • Competitive funding and project delivery: Proven track record of identifying, securing and managing external research funding (or equivalent competitive funding), including oversight of budgets, reporting, milestones, risk management, and delivery of funded-project outcomes.
  • Research integrity, ethics and governance: Commitment to responsible conduct of research, including ethics and compliance requirements, data management/governance, authorship and publication integrity, and adherence to relevant University and regulatory standards.
  • Impact, translation and external engagement: Ability to translate research into real-world impact beyond academia, including engagement with industry, professional bodies, NGOs, government and community partners; evidence of influence on policy and practice where relevant (e.g., advisory roles, consultations, uptake, media engagement); and ability to communicate research effectively to non-academic audiences
  • Vietnam and Asia-Pacific contribution: Capability in strengthening Vietnam’s and the Asia-Pacific region’s innovation ecosystem through capacity-building, technology adoption, partnership development, and/or international collaboration that strengthens RMIT’s research standing and local relevance.
  • Teaching excellence and curriculum leadership: Proven teaching proficiency across relevant areas (e.g., Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, AI, Data Science), with evidence of high-quality teaching practice, effective assessment design and moderation, and sustained improvement in student outcomes and student experience across diverse learning contexts.
  • Program development, accreditation and quality assurance: Demonstrated experience in curriculum and program development and continuous improvement, including student-centred and inclusive learning design. Experience contributing to (or leading) accreditation and quality assurance processes (e.g., ACS, Engineers Australia), and a strong commitment to academic integrity.
  • HDR supervision and researcher development: Significant experience supervising higher degree by research candidates, with evidence of effective supervision practices (e.g., timely milestones, completions, and/or high-quality outputs with candidates), and a commitment to researcher development and mentoring.
  • Leadership and collegial contribution: Strong leadership capability, including the ability to motivate and develop staff, contribute effectively to the management of teams, lead through influence across disciplines, and support a positive, inclusive and high-performing culture.
  • Stakeholder engagement, communication and negotiation: Exceptional interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, with demonstrated ability to build productive relationships with senior stakeholders and external partners, manage complex collaborations, and achieve agreed outcomes.
  • Governance, risk and resource stewardship: Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, University financial, governance and quality management systems, including prudent resource stewardship, compliance, and accountability
  • Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the position, RMIT Values and RMIT Leadership Model.
