This course explores music's multifaceted role in the human experience, emphasizing the cultural, social, and global contexts in which it exists through the lens of research conducted in multicultural Singapore. Students will engage with music from various traditions, reflecting on its impact on global interconnectivity

and its contribution to our understanding of humanity. Through research, critical analysis, and presentations, students will investigate how music shapes cultural identities, influences global markets and politics, and reflects the complexities of what it means to be human.

Global Reflections Integration:

• Examine how music facilitates global cultural exchange and connects diverse communities across borders.

• Discuss global music industries and their role in shaping cultural and political narratives worldwide, focusing on how music influences global markets and political movements through a Singaporean lens.

• Explore issues such as musical appropriation, the ethics of global music distribution, and how cultural norms impact the reception and production of music in different regions.

Humanity Pathway Integration:

• Investigate how music expresses and shapes conceptions of human identity, including themes like love, conflict, labor, and spirituality across cultures.

• Analyze how music has served as a medium for expressing ideas central to human identity, including themes of individual dignity, emotional depth, and societal values, while acknowledging the varying cultural and historical contexts in which such movements emerged.

• Reflect on how advances in technology and automation in music production raise questions about the role of human creativity in an increasingly automated world.

Job Requirement

•   A Ph.D or Master's Degree in related discipline from a reputable university.

•   At least 2 years of relevant teaching experience at the tertiary level is preferred

•   5 years of relevant work experience will be an added advantage

•   Course design and implementation based on UB syllabus and textbook

•   Assessment of students

•   Must be available to teach daytime on weekdays

•   Familiarity with Blackboard is a plus
