Associate Hydro Engineer

United States Of America, New York, Rochester Full time

Local Rotational Graduate is guided by three foundational principles: Exposure. Experience. Engagement. Exposure to multiple business and engineering functions providing the opportunity to connect with managers, teams and resources across the organization to build a strong network. Experience in a variety of challenging project-based assignments through immersion and on-the-job learning. Engagement in meaningful work and collaboration allows participants to feel empowered and thrive in their careers. The core of the program consists of three rotating job assignments generally every 6-9 months across one of the several potential tracks. Depending on the track, you may establish broad experience across engineering groups or deeper experience within a more specialized area. Each is designed to develop the experience and critical skills needed for your future role after graduating from the program.

For each rotation, participants will be tasked with challenging but rewarding assignments that will have a positive impact on the communities we serve while also providing opportunities to develop as future engineering leaders. Members may also be given opportunities to work on Process Improvement or Cross Functional Projects that relate to their rotations. This opportunity will be located in Rochester, NY within the Hydro Engineering Group.

The Hydro Engineering group is responsible for the engineering, technical, regulatory and project support needed to safely, reliably, and efficiently operate and maintain NYSEG and RG&E hydroelectric generating facilities and associated water retaining structures throughout New York State. The team is involved with capital project development, design and execution, engineering support for operations and maintenance, regulatory and environmental compliance, and long‑term asset management. Hydro Engineering works closely with Hydro Operations, project management, regulatory agencies, and contractors to ensure safe and reliable operation of the facility, which support renewable energy goals and objectives.

The rotations may be in one of the following tracks, depending on business need and availability:

1. Rotation 1 - 8 months - Operations & Maintenance: Graduate will support engineering-driven O&M activities essential to the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of hydroelectric facilities. Responsibilities include assisting with equipment/facility condition assessments, performance and reliability studies, and development of preventative maintenance work plans, which are all required to sustain long‑term facility performance.

2. Rotation 2 - 8 Months - Hydroelectric Capital Projects: Graduate will support the lifecycle of hydroelectric major capital projects, including initiation, planning, design, and execution/construction. Rotation will provide exposure to project financials, schedules, engineering drawings, procurement, associated external stakeholder engagement (as necessary), and contractor coordination.

3. Rotation 3 - 8 months - Compliance / Regulatory: Graduate will learn how hydroelectric facilities meet environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements at a local, state and federal level. Activities may include supporting permitting efforts, assisting with site and dam safety inspections, and tracking compliance with agencies such as FERC and state/local environmental authorities. This rotation builds an understanding of operating hydroelectric facilities responsibly and in compliance with applicable laws and standards.

Rotation order subject to change.

The next cohort will start July 2026.
