Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) is seeking an experienced leader for Research Business Insights & Technology (BI&T) based in Hyderabad. This role is pivotal in supporting the strategic vision of Research BI&T and contributing to the transformation of drug discovery through data, technology, and AI. This is an opportunity to transform how we discover and design new therapies, from identifying intervention points in disease to selecting & designing molecules to preparing for INDs and entering into clinical studies, by ensuring BMS remains at the cutting edge of scientific discovery through its use of technology. This role will serve as a bridge between scientific and technical teams, working closely with research computational scientists, medicinal chemists, biotherapeutic scientists, biologists, translational scientists, and Research leadership.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Research & Development BI&T Hyderabad, the Associate Director, Research BI&T will work closely with the Vice President of Research BI&T in the US, the BBRC Research Lead in Bangalore and global teams to co-create and deliver innovative solutions that accelerate the path from idea to lifesaving medicine.

As the Associate Director for Research BI&T based out of our BMS Hyderabad office, you are part of the Research & Development IT team that delivers technology, platform, data and analytics capabilities for Research BI&T.

Key Responsibilities

·       Collaborate with global Research and Technology teams to co-create and implement the Research BI&T strategy in alignment with BMS’s R&D goals.

·       Partner with BBRC leadership and Research teams in Bangalore to integrate BBRC with BMS from a process and technology standpoint.

·       Lead the development and deployment of advanced analytics, AI/ML models, and data platforms to support drug discovery and translational research.

·       Ensure operational excellence by maintaining and enhancing core research systems such as ELN, LIMS, and analytic tools.

·       Drive innovation in in-silico drug design by partnering with computational chemistry and informatics teams.

·       Support translational and precision medicine initiatives by integrating preclinical, clinical, and real-world data.

·       Lead the implementation of machine learning models that improve target identification accuracy accelerating early discovery timelines.

·       Develop/maintain a data integration platform that unifies preclinical and clinical datasets, enabling more informed decision-making in translational research.

·       Lead initiatives to elevate and scale machine learning engineering practices across research teams. This includes transforming individual notebooks or prototype models into robust, production-grade inference systems that can serve a broad user base across therapeutic areas.

·       Drive the adoption of ML Engineering and Ops best practices to ensure reproducibility, scalability, and maintainability of AI/ML solutions in drug discovery workflows.

·       Develop and implement a comprehensive operational strategy for supporting scientific workloads (AI/ML, HPC, and research applications) across global time zones.

·       Mentor teams to ensure that tools and systems used by researchers are future-proofed and built in an integrative AI-first fashion.

·       Establish a strategic partnership with leading academic institutions to co-develop predictive models for drug efficacy

·       Manage a portfolio of technology projects, ensuring timely delivery, scientific impact, and alignment with budgetary constraints.

·       Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement within the Hyderabad BI&T team.

·       Mentor and develop a high-performing team of data scientists, engineers, and analysts.

·       Establish and maintain external collaborations with academic and industry partners to bring cutting-edge technologies into BMS workflows.

·       Communicate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into actionable insights.

·       Responsible for managing a team of ~30+ IT professionals including Data Engineers, Solution architects, Product analysts, LIMS among others.

·       Responsible for defining product schedule, budget, and timely delivery of technology solutions.

·       As a people lead, accountable for attracting, developing, and retaining exceptional talent and directing day-to-day activities of the team and partnering with US GDD data teams

·       Closely partner with Research, Global Drug Development and BI&T organizations, to influence, shape and adopt technology strategy for research.

·       Provides strategic feedback to vendors on service delivery and balances workload with vendor teams

·       Stays current with emerging trends in specialty areas. Identifies future state and dimensions of change (org, tech, cultural) to achieve. Creates transition plans for new processes, implements and monitors changes. Ensures alignment of plans with the enterprise's strategic vision and translates the vision to connect to team's work

Qualifications & Experience

·       Master’s degree or higher in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, MBA, Computer Science, Computational Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field.

·       15+ years of experience in biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, or technology sectors with a deep understanding of Drug Discovery and Research.

·       Proven track record of applying AI/ML and data technologies to drug discovery or early development.

·       Strong leadership skills with experience managing cross-functional and global teams.

·       Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.

·       Deep understanding of modern data science tools, computational biology, and predictive modeling.

·       Experience with cloud computing, high-performance computing, and enterprise data platforms.

·       Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and budgets effectively.

·       Familiarity with regulatory and data governance requirements in pharmaceutical R&D.

·       Passion for innovation and improving patient outcomes through technology.

·       Exhibit influential leadership and communication capabilities with a proven ability to engage, manage, develop and inspire a diverse geographical team.

·       Ensure long-term sustainability through proactive planning for system reliability, vulnerability management, patching, and compliance.

·       Collaborate with infrastructure and security teams to maintain high availability and performance of research computing environments.

·       Experience and expertise in establishing agile and product-oriented teams that work effectively with teams in the US and other global BMS sites.  

·       Initiates challenging opportunities that build strong capabilities for self and team

·       People manager level with supervisory responsibility for Individual Contributor and People Manager positions

·       Gives others challenging opportunities to build strong capabilities for team
