The role

We’re looking for an Associate Director of Software Engineering who can lead engineering organizations with both technical credibility and strong people leadership. This role exists to ensure our engineering teams are not just busy, but focused on the right problems, aligned to business and customer outcomes, and delivering with confidence.

This is a role for someone who has spent years building software, understands what good engineering looks like in practice, and has chosen to multiply their impact by growing teams and leaders. You will not be measured by how much code you write, but by how effectively your teams deliver, how resilient the systems are, and how clearly engineers understand the impact of their work.

You will own outcomes across multiple engineering teams and act as a senior leader who helps translate strategy into execution while strengthening how engineering operates at scale.

What you’re accountable for

1. Growing highperforming engineering organizations:

  • Lead multiple engineering teams through managers and senior technical leaders, setting a clear bar for ownership, quality, and professionalism.
  • Build a strong leadership bench by coaching managers and senior engineers on people leadership, decision‑making, and long‑term team health.
  • Create an environment where engineers are supported, challenged, and proud of the systems they deliver.

2. Connecting engineering work to business and customer impact:

  • Ensure the work your teams deliver is clearly aligned to the results the business is trying to achieve for our customers.
  • Help engineers understand how their day‑to‑day work drives real outcomes, not just shipped features.
  • Reinforce an outcome‑oriented mindset where prioritization and tradeoffs are made with impact in mind.

3. Turning strategy into sustained execution:

  • Translate company and product strategy into clear, actionable engineering priorities across multiple teams.
  • Balance speed, quality, and sustainability while navigating dependencies and constraints.
  • Own delivery outcomes, proactively managing risks, tradeoffs, and cross‑team coordination.

4. Providing technical leadership at scale:

  • Bring strong technical judgment to architectural and system‑level discussions without needing to be the hands‑on implementer.
  • Ensure technical decisions are intentional, aligned, and understood across teams.
  • Step in to guide or course‑correct when systems, practices, or architectures begin to drift or degrade.

5. Advancing engineering effectiveness and modern practices:

  • Continuously improve how work flows from idea to production, increasing clarity, confidence, and predictability.
  • Strengthen engineering fundamentals such as design quality, testing, reliability, security, and operability.
  • Lead adoption of agentic and AI‑assisted development practices—including spec‑driven development—with discipline, intent, and clear guardrails.

6. Operating as a senior leader within the organization:

  • Partner closely with product, architecture, platform, security, and operations to drive alignment and execution.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders across a wide range of technical depth, including senior leadership.
  • Manage budgets, staffing, and capacity with a long‑term view of organizational health and impact.

How you’re expected to lead:

  • You think in systems, but lead in increments
  • You build alignment through clarity and reasoning, not authority.
  • You combine empathy with high expectations and accountability
  • You are comfortable making hard calls and standing behind them.
  • You improve organizations through structure, focus, and coaching, not heroics.

What we care about in your background

We care less about specific technologies and more about experience, judgment, and demonstrated impact

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 6+ years of experience as a software engineer, building and operating production systems.
  • At least 4+ years of direct experience managing multiple engineering teams, including managing engineering managers or senior technical leads.
  • Proven ability to own outcomes across more than a single team in a complex product or platform environment.

Technical and delivery leadership:

  • Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices, architectures, and system design principles.
  • Ability to guide architectural direction, challenge assumptions, and reason clearly about tradeoffs.
  • Experience improving delivery predictability, system reliability, and engineering standards over time.

Agentic and AIassisted development:

  • Hands‑on experience working with agentic SDLC tools in real delivery environments.
  • Experience leading teams in adopting agentic practices such as specification‑driven development, explicit contracts, and intent‑preserving workflows.
  • A demonstrated habit of staying current with advances in this space and translating them into practical, responsible adoption.

Ways of working and communication:

  • Experience leading teams using agile frameworks such as Scrum, Kanban, or XP, ideally within a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) or similar multi‑team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience addressing audiences ranging from deeply technical to non‑technical.
  • Comfort operating in matrixed organizations and influencing across organizational boundaries.

What success looks like over time:

  • Engineering teams deliver with greater confidence, predictability, and quality
  • Managers and senior engineers grow into stronger leaders with clearer judgment.
  • Technical decisions feel intentional and aligned rather than accidental.
  • Agentic and AI‑assisted practices create real leverage, not noise or confusion.
  • Engineers understand how their work contributes to customer value and business results.
  • Stakeholders trust engineering commitments and communication.

Our offer

  • 36–40 hour working week with flexible working hours
  • Hybrid working model (up to 2 office days per week)
