Job Title: Japan Immunology Disease Area Head (DAH) — Medical Affairs

Position Summary:
The Japan Immunology Disease Area Head (DAH) is a strategic leadership role within Medical Affairs, reporting directly to the Immunology-Neuroscience Therapeutic Area Head (TAH). The DAH will provide medical expertise and guidance for BMS’s immunology portfolio, driving medical strategy and execution. You will be responsible for leading and developing a team of 5–6 office-based Medical Leads (medical advisors), while closely collaborating with the field-based Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) to ensure seamless integration across medical activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and implement the medical strategy for immunology assets in Japan in alignment with global and local objectives.

  • Lead and manage a team of 5–6 Medical Leads (MLs) and collaborate closely with area MSLs to optimize scientific engagement.

  • Prepare for and support the launch of new products in a diverse and dynamic rheumatology/immunology pipeline, which includes multiple diseases and compounds.

  • Effectively manage a complex portfolio, creating synergies across different teams and therapeutic areas, and maximizing diversity in approaches and perspectives.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and local laws, and represent Medical Affairs on cross-functional leadership teams.

  • Act as a key medical contact for external stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, academic societies, and regulatory authorities.

  • Champion evidence generation, scientific exchange, and medical education initiatives for assigned assets.

  • Collaborate closely with Commercial, Regulatory, Clinical Development, Market Access, and MSL teams.

  • Oversee data generation and analysis to support medical and commercial objectives.

  • Manage budget, resources, and performance for the Immunology medical team.

  • Serve as a credible ambassador for BMS medical affairs at internal and external forums.

Qualifications:

  • Education: MD or PhD preferred; advanced biomedical degree required.

  • Experience: Minimum 6 years’ experience in Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry.

  • People Management: Proven experience managing teams in a matrix environment.

  • Language: Fluency in Japanese and proficiency in English required (both verbal and written).

  • Ability to manage complex situations, foster synergies, and build effective and diverse teams.

  • Strong project management, analytical, and business acumen skills.

  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience as a Disease Area Lead or equivalent in medical affairs.

  • Experience in immunology, rheumatology, or related therapeutic areas in Japan.

  • Experience working in a global pharmaceutical organization.
