What is the opportunity?

The Credit Controls and Transformation (CCT) team is a part of the Credit Modeling and Methodology (CMM) group within RBC Group Risk Management. The CCT team maintains the governance framework within CMM and provides advice & guidance on all control matters across the department, covering 70+ credit risk models. 

This includes: 

  • Responsibility over the maintenance of all controls including any changes or enhancements.
  • Comprehensive reporting and tracking of all CMM compliance issues (audit, operational risk, model risk, etc.)
  • Acting as the primary liaison with Internal Audit, Operational Risk team and PwC on all control testing matters Actively pursuing opportunities where control and process improvements can be made.

The Associate Director will aid and/or lead these activities along with overall governance initiatives across CMM, under guidance of the Director, Credit Controls & Transformation.  The role requires continuous interaction with other groups, senior management and external stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.  Given the nature of the work, the opportunity to learn and grow is significant. You will identify areas of opportunity for continuous improvement in complex processes including Credit Risk Modelling, Reporting and Governance, IFRS 9 Allowance for Loan Losses and Enterprise-Wide Stress Testing.

What will you do?

  • Lead the management and coordination of the monthly Credit Models Governance Committee (CMGC) meetings; working with various stakeholders to ensure presentation materials are up to standard and reviewed in a timely manner
  • In coordination with CMM control performers (model development teams), lead discussions with internal / external auditors and 2LoD control testing teams to ensure smooth control testing cycles (including SOX testing) and efficient use of time.
  • Lead the refresh of Critical Data Element (CDE) Memos for all material CMM models and provide overall data governance expertise, working closely with model developers and the Data Management office.
  • Critically evaluate CMM governance & controls processes, procedures and reporting to identify areas for improvement, streamlining or re-engineering
  • Maintain the authoritative CMM Model Inventory, inclusive of model compliance status and upcoming deadlines for each CMM model
  • In the event of identified control deficiencies (either self-identified or identified by the 2nd or 3rd line of defense), aid in advising CMM leaders on understanding the significance and severity of the deficiency, identifying root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • In collaboration with other CCT team members, build and design an end-to-end CMM initiative / control / issue and resource planning view using an automated visualization tool.
  • Lead or Assist in the monthly issues & controls reporting process; working closely with the Model Risk Governance team to ensure consistency while highlighting issue or control developments which require escalation or senior leadership attention
  • Provide a controls and governance perspective on CMM model development initiatives, ensuring that key governance checkpoints are performed and adhered to
  • Provide support on Ad Hoc requests originating from various stakeholders

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • 7+ years’ experience in a Governance, Controls and/or Risk environment
  • Deep understanding of credit risk model lifecycle (development, validation, monitoring, remediation) and model risk governance practices
  • Strong communication (both verbal and written), influencing and stakeholder management skills
  • An exceptional ability to learn quickly and navigate through ambiguity to achieve high business results and drive continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability and experience liaising with internal and external auditors, operational risk teams and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with the Enterprise Issue Management System, Archer and MetricStream
  • Proven team player with a collaborative mindset
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office applications including intermediate level Excel skills.
  • Experience working with collaboration tools such as Confluence, Jira, Webex Teams.

 Nice-to-have

  • CPA designation (preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge and working experience with data management and data visualization using tools including Tableau.
