The LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The person in this role will provide coverage for all areas of the teaching hospital as needed with emphasis on areas that provide patient care during non-traditional business hours including Large Animal ICU, Small Animal ICU, Small Animal ER, and Anesthesia. It is essential that this person has expertise in the safe handling of both large and small species of animals and is able to provide instruction to veterinary students. This person will primarily be scheduled for shifts that fall between 4pm - 9am Monday through Friday as well as weekends; however, daytime shifts may be necessary dependent on hospital personnel needs and/or for training purposes.
Job Responsibilities:
35% - Perform & demonstrate technician duties for the service assigned with focus on skills needed to contribute proficiently in Large Animal ICU, Small Animal ICU, Small Animal ER, and Anesthesia. To include animal restraint, case work up, carrying out treatment plans, sample collection/submission, and requests for diagnostics. Have a basic working knowledge of specialized equipment in each area. Participate in training necessary to build and maintain skills.
30% -Monitor patients under the care of assigned service, carry out treatments as described/prescribed by doctors, maintain professional medical records, keep track and input charges for inpatients and outpatients in accordance with hospital and individual service policy. Assist with procedures and treatments performed by veterinary students and student employees.
15% - Maintain effective communication with the regular service technicians, clinicians, and house officers, and document relevant information to ensure seamless transitions when assuming or relinquishing service responsibilities. Participate in rounds with technicians and/or house officers, ensuring effective case transfer.
10% - Maintain and clean technical equipment such as endoscopes, ultrasound machines, ECG, oxygen tanks, anesthesia equipment, etc.
Stock and clean rooms, carts, and supplies to maintain the hospital in a constant state of readiness.
Assist in training of students and new staff in protocols including insuring proper biosecurity and infectious disease protocol is followed.
10% - Assist with blood bank, holiday, and emergency shifts. Participate in service on-call schedule. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of applicable experience OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology with 2 years of applicable experience OR CVT or equivalent with 2 years of applicable experience OR 5 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties OR 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician 1 at LSU SVM.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree
RVT or equivalent credential
Preferred Certifications/Licenses:
CVT, RVT, LVT Certified, Registered, or Licensed Veterinary Technician
Special and Physical Qualifications:
Required to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Required to be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), sitting, bending, climbing, crawling, pushing/pulling, grasping, squatting, and/or twisting.
