Manulife

Associate Back-end Software Engineer

Chengdu, Sichuan Full time

Join Manulife’s Singapore eBusiness team as an Associate Back-end Software Engineer to help build and scale cloud-native microservices that power our next-generation agency servicing platform—Manulife 365 (M365). You’ll play a key role in delivering secure, resilient, and high-performance back-end solutions that directly enhance how agents and customers interact with our services. This role offers the chance to work with modern Java/Spring technologies on Microsoft Azure, collaborate with global teams, and grow within a culture that values learning, ownership, and real business impact.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy secure, high-performance back-end microservices using Java, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud within Microsoft Azure’s cloud-native ecosystem.

  • Architect and implement solutions leveraging core Azure services—including Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Service Bus, Azure Redis Cache, Azure Key Vault, and Application Insights—for messaging, caching, secrets management, and observability.

  • Own end-to-end delivery of features through CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps), ensuring smooth deployment, health monitoring, and configuration management via ConfigMaps and secrets in AKS.

  • Collaborate with offshore and cross-functional teams to translate business needs into technical solutions that align with cloud architecture standards and Agile delivery practices.

  • Drive code quality, system reliability, and continuous improvement through peer reviews, performance tuning, documentation, and proactive adoption of cloud best practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on back-end software development experience after graduation.

  • Proven track record building and maintaining production-grade microservices using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.

  • Direct experience deploying and operating containerized applications on a major cloud platform—such as Azure, AWS, Alibaba Cloud, or Tencent Cloud—with familiarity in Kubernetes or similar orchestration tools.

  • Proficient with Git/GitHub workflows and participation in Agile teams using CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field from a nationally recognized university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a Tier-1 Chinese university (e.g., Sichuan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China).

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure—particularly AKS, Service Bus, Redis Cache, Application Insights, Managed Identities, and infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Helm charts, YAML manifests).

  • Familiarity with cloud observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, ELK, or Azure Monitor) and secure coding practices (e.g., secrets management, RBAC).

  • Previous experience working in multinational corporations with global delivery models, English documentation, and cross-time-zone collaboration.

  • Strong curiosity and adaptability—demonstrated by quickly mastering new cloud platforms or migrating workloads across environments (e.g., from Aliyun to Azure).

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.

  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.

  • As part of our global team, we’ll support you in shaping the future you want to see.
