Position Description

McGill University’s School of Human Nutrition invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Maternal and Child Nutrition. The candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role in one of the foremost Nutrition and Dietetics institutions in North America with an international reputation in academic research, teaching, and credentialling. This position in Maternal and Child Nutrition will broaden the School’s offerings, attract undergraduate and graduate students, and provide an excellent complement to the Faculty’s strategic research plan in One Health. Key to the School’s “from molecule to society” approach, is its research and teaching that integrate foundational concepts in nutrient metabolism, cell biology, and genetics with clinical, community, epidemiological and policy nutrition research to improve the health and well-being of societies.

The School of Human Nutrition has a comprehensive inventory of well-equipped laboratories, animal and tissue culture facilities, and platforms for research with human participants. On-campus sites include the Mass Spectrometry and Molecular Nutrition Lab; the Clinical Nutrition Research Unit which allows for comprehensive physiological assessments of body composition and sampling of biospecimens; the Food and Nutrition Laboratories which houses high-performance industry-standard equipment, making it ideal for advanced food-service training; and the Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment (CINE) which provides study of the impact of environments on food systems and nutritional status of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally. In addition, research is conducted at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC); teaching hospitals and community-based projects are active in the Montreal area,  in communities of Indigenous Peoples, as well as in  Latin America,  Africa, and South Asia.

The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is located on the Macdonald Campus, 30 km from Montreal’s city centre and the downtown Campus.  It is near Montreal’s life-sciences and pharmaceutical business sectors and has a strong record in research and training in agricultural, environmental, food, and human nutrition sciences, dietetics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, small and large animal disease models, parasitology, and bioresource engineering. The Faculty actively supports inter-disciplinary teaching and research and contributes to McGill’s global leadership position through numerous international research and field training programs. Job Duties

The candidate should conduct innovative research in maternal and child nutrition, with a focus on addressing critical issues related to maternal and child health and childhood development, and is expected to lead a strong research team of students and scientists by acquiring external funding from national and provincial sources (e.g. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Genome Canada, Fonds de recherche du Québec, Genome Québec, etc.). The successful candidate will contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and is expected to participate in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, graduate student supervision, mentorship, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). A senior hire may also have an opportunity for upper-level administrative duties within the School.

Qualifications

Interested candidates should have a Ph.D. in nutrition or a related area. While not required, qualification as a registered dietitian (R.D. or P.Dt.) would be an asset, as would eligibility for membership in l’Ordre des diététistes nutritionnistes du Québec. The candidate should have previous training in maternal and child nutrition from an epidemiological or clinical perspective. Top priority research areas include, but are not limited to, prenatal nutrition, breastfeeding, complementary feeding practices, and nutritional interventions for maternal and child health conditions. A demonstrated record of research experience and excellence, including publication in relevant peer-reviewed journals and evidence of potential for obtaining independent external research funding is expected. The candidate should also demonstrate evidence of teaching, mentoring, and advising students.
