Position Summary

The Washington University School of Medicine (WashU Medicine), a global leader in research, teaching, and patient care, seeks an accomplished executive to serve in the newly created role of Assistant Vice Chancellor, Human Resources and Organizational Strategy (AVC). Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), the AVC serves as a senior leader within the WashU Office of Human Resources. WashU Medicine is ranked #2 in NIH funding among U.S. medical schools.

The AVC serves as a senior advisor to WashU Medicine leadership, offering critical insights and strategic counsel on workforce-related matters that impact the university’s mission and operations. The AVC advises on a broad range of topics, including human resource strategy, organizational design and development, talent management, workforce planning, faculty affairs, clinical operations, business expansion, and integration. They also liaise with our health system partners, BJC Healthcare, on human resources and administrative issues.

The AVC works closely with the CHRO to develop and cascade the strategic vision and direction for all areas of human resources at the school of medicine, from recruitment to change management initiatives. They collaborate with leaders of the Centers of Expertise in the WashU Office of Human Resources and HR Business Partners (HRBPs) to develop and implement seamless solutions to address WashU Medicine's needs in compensation and benefits, employee relations, talent acquisition/management, analytics and reporting, and HRIS (Workday), among others.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates and builds relationships with the Vice Chancellor for Medical Finance and Administration, Dean of WashU Medicine, Vice Chancellor of Clinical Affairs/CEO of Faculty Practice Plan, Department Chairs, and other senior leaders and faculty to develop and implement HR strategies and operational plans to advance the Medical School’s academic, research, and clinical missions 
  • Serves as a trusted strategic advisor and business partner, offering expert guidance on resource allocation and operational efficiency.  
  • Collaborates and builds relationships with university offices and leaders on both campuses, including Office General Counsel, HRBPs, and external stakeholders serving WashU Medicine’s needs. Provide coaching and guidance to university leaders on talent-related matters.  
  • Ensures alignment of Medical Schools' policies and HR strategies with the university’s overarching mission and goals. Regularly meets with WashU executive leadership to stay aligned on broad-based approaches and key messaging 
  • Stays current on BJC’s HR goals, policies, and changes to ensure alignment with the School of Medicine policies and practices.  
  • Facilitates the development of a robust data analytics and reporting program, complete with core metrics for key areas, including turnover, staffing ratios, and other performance indicators to support data-driven workforce planning and development Serves as a data steward for data governance for WashU Medicine HR data. 
  • Serves as a key communicator to cascade the vision and voice of the CHRO. This includes drafting and disseminating broad-based university communications (in collaboration with the HR communications team) on vital topics such as clinical operations, human resources, and emergency/crisis management. Develops impactful presentations for themselves and the CHRO, aimed at guiding organizational change initiatives, ensuring adherence to best practices, supporting compliance with regulations/policy, and enhancing employee engagement.  
  • Drives change management efforts. Identifies opportunities for growth and innovation within WashU Medicine, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence. Leads the evaluation of potential impacts of proposed changes on employees, operations, processes, integrations, and reports. Identifies and communicates with stakeholders who may be impacted to understand needs.  
  • Develops comprehensive change management plans aligned with the organization’s goals, including training, support, and communication strategies. Develops and executes clear, consistent communication plans across various channels to articulate the rationale, benefits, and details of the change to all relevant stakeholders.  Develops and leads organizational effectiveness programming to foster a healthy culture rooted in transparency and open communication to support inclusion and organizational alignment.  
  • Facilitates compliance and HR best practices. Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, accreditation requirements, and university policies related to HR and university operations. Stays abreast of industry trends and practices. Escalates information and recommendations to key stakeholders for consideration of their applicability to WashU HR strategy

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible leadership experience in human resources, organization development, or operations in an academic healthcare setting, with at least five years in a supervisory capacity.  
  • Knowledgeable of complex clinical, research, and administrative operations, as well as personnel policies and procedures 
  • Proficiency in complex project management, strategic planning, data-driven decision making, and employee communications. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • MBA or other related master’s degree.
  • Strategic advisory experience, change management, and organizational development expertise.  
  • Ability to navigate a large, matrixed organization.  
  • Track record of using HR data and analytics to drive decision-making.  
  • Well-developed strategic thinking and analytical skills.  
  • Emotional intelligence and political savvy.  
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations governing employment. 
  • Ability to engage, influence, and manage sensitive conversations with medical and academic leaders  
  • Exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in a shared services environment.  
  • Certifications: SPHR, SHRM, and/or PROSCI certification.
