AXIS Construction team is seeking a dynamic individual to join our strategic team of underwriters operating in one of the most exciting parts of the specialty insurance industry. We currently invite applications for the role of Assistant Underwriter for our market leading construction team.

The Assistant Underwriter, will act within established guidelines to support the underwriters to market, analyse, review, evaluate and monitor new and renewal accounts for construction business.

Underwriting Support
Assist in underwriting a portfolio of construction risks, including:

  • Contractors’ All Risks (CAR)

  • Erection All Risks (EAR)

  • Project-specific and annual construction programmes

  • Delegated Authority business

  • Support risk assessment by reviewing submissions, policy wordings, schedules, and supporting documentation.

  • Obtain natural catastrophe modelling results for the underwriting team

  • Prepare underwriting information, pricing models, and risk summaries for review by senior underwriters.

  • Assist in determining appropriate terms, conditions, deductibles, and premiums in line with underwriting strategy.


Broker & Market Interaction

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Lloyd’s brokers.

  • Support broker meetings, presentations, and renewal discussions.

  • Respond to broker enquiries in a timely and professional manner.

  • Assist with new business development and renewal negotiations.


Portfolio Management & Analytics
Support monitoring of portfolio performance, including:

  • Premium, exposure, and aggregation

  • Loss ratios and claims trends

  • Assist with management information, reporting, and data quality initiatives.

  • Ensure accurate entry and maintenance of underwriting data within Lloyd’s systems.


Governance, Compliance & Controls
Ensure underwriting activity complies with:

  • Lloyd’s Minimum Standards

  • Managing agent underwriting guidelines

  • Regulatory and compliance requirements

  • Assist with peer reviews, referrals, and audit processes.

  • Maintain accurate and complete underwriting files and documentation.


Collaboration & Development

  • Support continuous improvement of underwriting processes and controls.

  • Actively pursue professional development, including CII qualifications, as appropriate.


Skills & Experience
Essential

  • Experience in insurance or reinsurance, ideally within construction or specialty lines.

  • Understanding of Lloyd’s market operations and underwriting processes.

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High level of attention to detail and organisational ability.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other underwriting systems.


Desirable

  • Previous exposure to construction insurance (CAR/EAR, project risks).

  • Experience working with Lloyd’s brokers or within a Lloyd’s syndicate or managing agent.

  • Progress toward, or completion of, CII qualifications.

  • Familiarity with exposure management tools and underwriting platforms.
