Job Description:

The Department of Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Atmospheric Science with expertise in using innovative data-driven approaches, with preference for expertise in AI/ML applications, to advance understanding and/or prediction of weather or climate. 

The successful candidate will be expected to build a nationally recognized, externally funded research program; mentor graduate and undergraduate students; and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including the use of AI/ML in meteorology. Research should complement one or more of the existing strengths in the department, which include numerical weather prediction, climate modeling, high-impact weather and climate events, boundary layer meteorology, and surface hydrology. Additionally, the successful candidate will have a commitment to excellence in research, teaching at all levels, and performance of service duties.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or a closely-related field.

  • Evidence of research and expertise using innovative data science to improve understanding and/or prediction of weather and climate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated potential to establish a strong publication record.

  • Demonstrated potential to establish a successful, externally funded research program that complements existing strengths in the department.

  • Demonstrated potential for collaboration with other faculty and units on campus.

  • Demonstrated potential to attain excellence in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels including the use of AI/ML in meteorology

 

Department/Program & College Description:

The Department of the Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate is staffed by 16 faculty and has strengths in climate and paleoclimate, microscale and mesoscale meteorology, hydrology, solid-earth processes, geochemistry, and geoscience education. Undergraduate programs in climate science, earth science, geology, and meteorology serve approximately 200 undergraduate majors. About 30 M.S. and Ph.D. students are enrolled in the geology and meteorology graduate programs. Generous support for the Department is provided by an active group of alumni and friends. The Geology Program runs a multi-use field station in northwest Wyoming with a 60-year tradition of providing immersive education for students from across the country.

Departmental research facilities include state-of-the-art laboratories in stable isotope geochemistry, analogue tectonic modeling, and biogeochemistry.  University research facilities include a Linux computing cluster with over 330 compute nodes and over 38,000 CPU cores, over 200 GPUs, 200 TB of memory, 2PB of high-speed data storage, and high-speed networking. The Meteorology program is co-located with the Iowa Environmental Mesonet and its administrator, giving faculty and students direct access to this well-known archive of weather and climate data.
