The Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center (MHC) is a community mental health center that provides comprehensive treatment of co-occurring and substance use disorders. The treatment arms of the Lloyd C. Elam MHC include psychosocial and medical detox, residential rehabilitation, intensive outpatient programming (IOP), and outpatient services. The Lloyd C. Elam MHC operates one of the few RAINBOW programs in the State of Tennessee, in which pregnant and postpartum women can access residential services for substance use and co-occurring disorders. The Elam MHC Medical Director will provide medical oversight of all psychiatric services within the Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center. This will include oversight of medical students, psychiatric residents, and mid-level providers providing services at the Elam MHC.

Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities):

  • Provides psychiatric care to a panel of patients at the Elam MHC.
  • Timely psychiatric documentation of care and treatment plans in the electronic health record, in accordance with psychiatric practice standards and Quality Management.
  • Assume primary responsibility for the quality of all Elam MHC medical and clinical services through the implementation of the agency's Quality Management Plan.
  • Assume primary responsibility for treatment planning, discharge planning, and medical service delivery concerning the operation of all Elam Center treatment services.
  • Provide medical supervision for all medical staff.
  • Manages administrative responsibilities such as integration and coordination of medical, psychiatric, and substance use disorder services, mentoring mid-level providers, ensuring clinical staff are continually trained and able to coordinate work responsibilities with other operating units of the department.
  • Collaborates with faculty and psychiatry residency to determine clinical faculty and resident on-call schedules; ensures timely distribution of new and revised schedules.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders of the Elam MHC.
  • Acquire and maintain functional knowledge of clinical chart reviews of patients, to assure compliance with all internal and funding agency accreditation standards for service delivery and documentation
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Director, Nurses Manager, and Executive Director, the Elam MHC Medical Director provides direction and coordination of internal continuing education programs and support for faculty and staff at Elam MHC.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to review and update Elam MHC policies and procedures
  • Actively participates in customer service-related issues and adheres to Elam MHC values
  • Works with Quality Assurance Coordinator and Clinical Director to monitor and evaluate Elam MHC clinical programs.
  • Participate in assessment and revision of treatment protocols for substance abuse disorder services according to evidence-based treatment.
  • Assists in the design, implementation, and evaluation of new clinical programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to establish and maintain a working relationship with staff, faculty, students, and residents

Ability to provide evidence-based mental health services at Elam MHC or other clinical service locations

Education and Experience Required:

  • Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution, with completion of an accredited residency in Psychiatry.
  • Board Eligible/ Board Certified in Psychiatry
  • Comfort with mid-level provider collaboration

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Board Certification in Psychiatry with a minimum of 5–7 years of clinical experience in addiction treatment settings, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Experience working with underserved populations, community mental health programs, or integrated care models is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations related to substance use treatment (e.g., SAMHSA, DEA guidelines).
  • Experience in academic or teaching settings is a plus, especially involving residents, fellows, and/or medical students.
  • Addiction Psychiatry experience or completion of an approved Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

  • Board Eligible/Board Certification in Psychiatry
  • Addiction Psychiatry or Addiction Medicine Certification if applicable.
  • Valid medical license (or eligibility for licensure) in the state of Tennessee.
  • Valid DEA Registration.
  • Current BLS certification.
