The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - AI Cluster Hire Initiative

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the College of Engineering

and Architecture at Howard University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position

for a broadly trained computer scientist with research expertise and teaching interests in

advancing artificial intelligence to address healthcare challenges with a focus on multimodal

foundation models to clinical decision support systems. With an anticipated start date of August

2026, this position is part of the Office of the Provost Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cluster Hire

Initiative, which aims to expand AI interdisciplinary research and instruction across the

University

This position is part of the cluster, "Development and Application of Multimodal Foundation

Models to Clinical Decision Support Systems," which is jointly led by the College of

Engineering and Architecture and the College of Medicine. The goal is to bring together and

invest in faculty across departments whose research and scholarship are linked through this

cluster and to attract faculty members who can bring different perspectives.

This cluster aims to recruit scholars with expertise in the development of AI models and

multimodal models, as well as their application to electronic medical records (EMR). These

efforts will contribute to generating predictive insights about patients' health and well-being,

addressing critical challenges in healthcare delivery, and improving health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research in AI with a focus on health applications.
  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in AI, machine learning, data science, or health informatics.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to apply AI methodologies to analyze and model complex healthcare data, including EMRs.
  • Pursue external funding to support research and training initiatives.
  • Mentor students from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and equitable academic environment.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field, such as computer science or data science.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to secure external funding for research.
  • Experience or potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI, machine learning, or multimodal modeling.
  • A record of (or potential for) impactful research, evidenced by publications, grants, or industry partnerships.
  • Experience or interest in applying AI to EMR data or healthcare challenges.
  • A commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting student access to and engagement in their teaching and research/scholarship/creative activities.

Salary Range: $100,000 - $115,000
