Position Description

The McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery, Division of Pediatric Otoloaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery is internationally recognized for excellence in clinical care, research, and education, and is committed to advancing innovative, patient-centered, and multidisciplinary pediatric surgical programs. The successful candidate will be based at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), one of Canada’s leading pediatric academic hospitals and a major teaching site of McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, Quebec. The Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery delivers comprehensive, tertiary and quaternary care across the full spectrum of pediatric ENT conditions, including:

• Complex airway and aerodigestive disorders;
• Otology and hearing health;
• Head and neck masses and congenital anomalies;
• Sleep-disordered breathing;
• Voice and swallowing disorders;

Care is delivered within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary model, in close partnership with audiology, speech-language pathology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, and allied health teams. The Division is deeply committed to:

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery where they will be expected to develop as a clinician–scientist and to articulate a compelling vision for building a sustainable, high-impact research program within the Division and Department. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate strong potential to secure competitive, peer-reviewed external funding and to establish a program of scholarship that advances the field of pediatric otolaryngology through innovation, translational research, and/or health systems impact, including global surgery research.

The ability to translate clinically relevant questions into rigorous research programs that produce impactful scholarly work, and the potential to achieve national and international visibility will be highly valued.

In addition, the successful candidate’s clinical responsibilities will include:  

• Developping and maintaining a busy tertiary-care pediatric otolaryngology practice;
• Contributing to on-call coverage and divisional clinical activities;
• Delivering patient- and family-centered care in a multidisciplinary environment.

Academic responsibilities will include:

• Participating actively in undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship education;
• Providing clinical teaching, supervision, and mentorship to medical students, residents, and fellows;
• Engaging in scholarly activities, including clinical research, education scholarship, or innovation.

Candidates with a defined area of expertise are particularly encouraged to apply, including (but not limited to):

• Airway and aerodigestive disorders;

• Global surgery or health systems innovation;
• Surgical education and CPD.

Regarding leadership and service, the incumbent will be expected to contribute to the academic and administrative missions of the Division, the Department, and the University, participating in institutional, national, and/or international committees and initiatives while demonstrating a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold an MD degree (or equivalent);
• Be eligible for licensure with the Collège des médecins du Québec;
• Hold Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery (or equivalent);
• Have completed fellowship training in Pediatric Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery;
• Demonstrate clinical excellence and strong teaching ability;
• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.

Assets

• Advanced degree (e.g. MSc, PhD, MHPE);
• Evidence of research productivity or educational innovation;
• Emerging or established national/international profile;
• Demonstrated expertise in a focused area of pediatric otolaryngology (e.g., airway, otology, global surgery, aerodigestive care);
• Given the Department’s strategic expansion in global surgery, candidates with experience in global health or a clear vision for advancing equitable, sustainable international partnerships and capacity-building initiatives are particularly encouraged to apply.
