Job Description:

Summary:

This position performs inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of campus thermal systems, related plant equipment, water treatment systems as well as maintenance and repair of campus domestic water & sewer distribution systems, and campus gas utility distribution systems within the domain of the Facilities Management Division. Maintains records pertaining to the operation, maintenance and repair of these systems. Responsible for the proper storage and usage of tools and equipment used in repair operations. This position works to resolve facility issues and customer concerns, ensuring good public relations, a positive department image through personal contacts and assurance of quality standards to provide exceptional customer service, and a safe, functional, clean, efficient and attractive living and learning environment. Supports in the resolution of afterhours and weekend request received though the customer response center line (2Fix).  

The Assistant Operating Engineer reports to the Assistant Chief Operating Engineer along with the Lead Engineers. This position is part of the Energy Management team consisting of licensed operating engineers and other trades persons.

Essential Functions:

  • As directed by the Lead Engineers  or Assistant Chief  Engineer, the incumbent performs inspections, maintenance (preventative and predictive), trouble shooting, and repair of campus thermal systems (including but not limited to steam, chilled water, and heating water), related plant equipment, water treatment systems (including but not limited to natatorium systems, boiler systems, and chiller systems)   as well as maintenance and repair of domestic water & sewer campus distribution systems, and campus gas utility distribution systems to assure the fitness for use and reliability of our buildings, systems and equipment to assure the fitness for use and reliability of our buildings, systems and equipment in support of the service, research and academic mission of the university. Completes training as required regarding the above systems. Operates and maintains utility systems to meet department, reliability and energy efficiency objectives along with regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Maintain records pertaining to the inspection, operation, maintenance and repair of campus utilities systems, and related plant equipment to build a database from which historical data can be used to optimize scheduling and repair of critical components of the heating and cooling systems. Make recommendations to improve the efficiency and reliability of campus managed utility systems. Responsible for the proper storage and usage of tools and equipment used in the repair operations to ensure the availability of an adequate operating inventory of tools and supplies.

  • Performs Inspections of campus utilities systems, and related plant equipment tests to insure that boiler and chiller water system chemistry is within the acceptable limits and maintains proper chemical water treatment through the knowledge and application of approved training provided by the chemical distributor.

  • Supports in the resolution of after-hours and weekend request received though the customer response center line (2Fix).

  • Completes training and performance requirements to meet department goals as well as regulatory requirements. Maintains an IDP (Individual Development Plant).  Ensures all items are documented in the LMS (Learning Management System)

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-time.

  • 40 hours/week.

  • Non-exempt. Evening and weekend work is required. This position will be required to work multiple shifts. Current shift schedules are (7AM to 3PM, 3PM to 11PM, 11PM to 7AM). This is a relief position, 24/7 coverage. The incumbent will be required to work a second consecutive shift should their relief fail to arrive for the next shift. The incumbent is required to work unscheduled shifts as needed.

  • The position will perform job duties in confined spaces and be exposed to extreme temperatures. This is a physically demanding position which requires strenuous physical exertion such as frequent or constant lifting, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects to perform essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • This position may work in areas which experience temperature extremes (i.e. heat or cold) or confined spaces in the performing of principle accountabilities for the position.

Salary Range:

  • $32.02 - $36.00/hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience

  • Basic Trade Knowledge (1-2 years)

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • 6th Class DC Steam Engineers license.

  • HVAC/Plumbing training certifications.

  • Boiler Engineer Low Pressure Steam Training Diploma.

  • 1-2 years of College/Associate’s Degree.

  • Facilities Management Certificate.

  • 1-2 years CMMS.

  • Building Systems Knowledge.

  • Maintenance experience (3-4years).

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Maintain a valid driver license with fewer than 2 points.

  • Required: Basic Microsoft Office skills & email usage; use of basic hand tools/power tools; use of safety apparatus, personnel protective equipment

  • Preferred: Basic water treatment/testing; troubleshooting HVAC systems; EMS usage.
