Assistant Maintenance Mechanic

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, and selected electrical and plumbing systems and equipment. The role also includes general carpentry and minor construction or renovation tasks, along with other related duties as needed. Work is performed following established procedures but allows some discretion in choosing the best methods to complete assignments. Work is regularly reviewed by the assigned Maintenance Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, and the General Manager of Maintenance.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Assists with the installation, maintenance and repair of various mechanical systems and equipment, including but not limited to overhead doors and windows, locking mechanisms, fencing and automatic gates, and general mechanical equipment and systems.

Assists in maintaining and repairing HVAC and refrigeration equipment in designated County buildings and facilities.

Assists with plumbing and electrical maintenance and repair work as necessary.

Performs preventive maintenance tasks as scheduled.

Performs routine diagnoses of equipment and system problems and failures; assists with repair work or parts replacement as necessary.

Assists in performing general carpentry work for building construction / renovation as required.

Maintains assigned tools and equipment.

Maintains accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed by utilizing the department’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

Performs all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations and standards of safety and quality; ensures the timely completion of all assignments.

Attends training, workshops, meetings, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires 1-3 years' experience in a related field maintenance or technical field.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, reaching, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.  Requires climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.

Compensation Minimum: $17.85
