BASIC FUNCTION:

The Assistant Director of Health Promotion supports Claremont McKenna College students in developing a lifelong commitment to their health and well-being through education, outreach, peer leadership, and student support. Guided by a framework that includes multiple dimensions of wellness, the Assistant Director takes a holistic approach by designing and delivering health promotion initiatives that address a variety of areas, including alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, healthy relationships, nutrition, and mental/emotional wellbeing.  The Assistant Director plays a key role in developing and delivering wellbeing initiatives, supervising student peer educators, supporting mental health case management efforts, and collaborating with campus partners to meet the evolving needs of students. The Assistant Director contributes to a comprehensive, inclusive, and evidence-informed approach to student health promotion that empowers students to build self-advocacy and navigate toward their own solutions.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean of Students, Mental Health and Health Promotion, the Assistant Director of Health Promotion works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate evidence-based health promotion programs that support student wellbeing and healthy decision-making.
  • Deliver presentations, workshops, and trainings for students, student leaders, faculty, staff, and families on topics relevant to college student health and wellbeing.
  • Develop and maintain health education materials across multiple platforms (e.g., digital content, print materials, web resources).
  • Recruit, train, and supervise student Peer Health Ambassadors (PHAs), fostering a collaborative and supportive peer education program that aligns with the Dean of Students Office wellbeing framework.
  • Provide ongoing training, mentorship, and feedback to PHAs and other student leaders to support effective programming and skill development.
  • Collaborate with PHAs and other health-focused student organizations to plan and implement health promotion initiatives and events.
  • Support the Dean of Students Office mental health case management system by meeting with students, identifying needs, and connecting them with appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with students to support progress, encourage self-advocacy, and promote wellbeing.
  • Document student interactions in Maxient Case Management System and participate in regular case consultation meetings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Dean of Students Office and campus partners to evaluate student wellbeing and academic trends and create responsive programming.
  • Support restorative and educational interventions related to student conduct or health-related concerns, as appropriate.
  • Apply harm reduction, public health frameworks, and inclusive practices in all programming and outreach efforts.
  • Maintain working knowledge of relevant policies, regulations, and best practices related to student mental health and wellbeing.
  • Partner with campus and 7C consortium colleagues to support coordinated, holistic approaches to student wellbeing (ie. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Department of Athletics and Physical Education, Health Education Outreach, Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Black Student Affairs, Chicano Latino Student Affairs, and the Queer Resource Center).
  • Serve on committees and working groups as needed to advance health promotion and student support initiatives.
  • Maintain a visible, approachable presence on campus, including participation in programs that may occur during evenings or weekends.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:

EDUCATION: Master’s degree completed or in progress, preferably in higher education, public health, social work, counseling, or other health or mental health-related field; or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is required.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years working with adolescents or college population in the area of health promotion/education, mental health services, and/or program development is required. Leadership positions and internships in a graduate program may count towards this experience.

LICENSES: A valid driver’s license or equivalent alternate form of transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Ability to communicate, engage, and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and religious backgrounds, and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect and integrate cultural sensitivity when providing services.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, ability to build rapport, collaboration skills, and familiarity with the principles and limitations of confidentiality. Ability to demonstrate empathy tactfully and exercise a high level of discretion when dealing with private and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to manage conversations that include sensitive topics during one-on-one discussions and educational initiatives.
  • Excellent public speaking skills.
  • Experience in graphic design and social media.
  • Familiarity with health and wellbeing issues relevant to a college population.

OTHER:

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Light (up to 20 lbs.)

SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range is $70,304 - $73,000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position supervises four or more Student Peer Health Ambassadors

REPORTS TO: This position reports to the Senior Assistant Dean, Mental Health and Health Promotion
