PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

Reporting to the Assistant Dean/Director for Accommodations & Academic Resources and Services (AARS), the Assistant Director will support the institution’s goal of providing accommodations to ensure all aspects of the college experience, i.e., academics, co-curricular, residential, and employment opportunities are accessible to all students. This position will advise, counsel and support students with disabilities in achieving their goals. The Assistant Director for Accommodations will also work collaboratively with other units within the Division of Student Affairs, the College, and Consortium, including by not limited to Residential Life, Dining Services, Student Health Services, Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services, the Tiernan Field House, Dean of Faculty Office, Dean of Students Office, Facilities, and/or other campus departments.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Accommodations Evaluation

  • Meet with students seeking to register for accommodations through intake meetings that review disability documentation which could include but is not limited to, 1) psychological-educational assessments, psychological evaluations, medical and other technical documentation, 2) history of accommodations and, 3) current impact of disability; to determine with the student the appropriate and reasonable academic, housing, and meal accommodations needed in accordance with ADA, Section 504, the ADAAA and Disability Services documentation requirements.

  • When necessary, communicate with health care providers to gather additional documentation related to a student’s accommodations. 

 

Case Management

  • Co-manage with the Assistant Dean/Director a caseload of students who receive accommodations as outlined by the Assistant Dean/Director, by documenting student records and maintaining confidentiality as required by law and College policy.

  • Respond to student/family correspondence and inquires via phone and/or email regarding accommodations services available at the College in a timely manner.

  • Collect and report necessary data for assessment purposes.

 

Resources Coordination & Partnerships

  • Coordinate supportive services/auxiliary services (i.e., interpreters, adaptive technology, exam proctoring, and/or note-taking services) on a case-by-case basis.

  • Assist with coordinating temporary accommodations, including transportation services for mobility impairments.

  • Develop partnerships with campus and communal supportive resources to promote academic success and retention.

  • Provide ongoing consultation, training, technical assistance, guidance and support to faculty and staff to ensure students have equal access, learning and other educational opportunities.

  • Participate in the interactive process to resolve professor or student accommodation requests or grievances.

 

Participation and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with AARS staff in the areas of academic resources i.e., tutoring and coaching, and other programs.

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and represent the office or serve as department representative on designated committees.

  • Attend professional development trainings, webinars, workshops, to stay current with trends related to post-secondary disabilities issues.

  • Assist with website updates and other marketing tasks related to AARS.

  • Participate in special projects or programming related to disability and accommodations.

  • Serve as a member of the Scripps Administrator On-Call (AOC) team, participating in education and training for on-call staff in support of students in crisis.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Actively support the College’s Principles of Community and Institutional Values in the performance of job duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

 

  • Knowledge of disability related laws including, but not limited to, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, as amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Federal Fair Housing Act.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

  • Strong advising and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working with Accessible Information Management (AIM), Messenger Pigeon, Speechify, FM systems, and other assistive technology preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff.

  • Ability to help students develop optimal learning skills and present training and motivational programs to a wide variety of groups.

  • Ability to navigate and prioritize multiple responsibilities in a busy work environment.

  • Exercise sound judgment in dealing with sensitive and/or confidential matters.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, education, or in a related field, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.

 

At least two years of experience working with disability support services is required.

 

Minimum of three years of experience working in a higher education setting, or a combination of relevant professional and higher education experience is preferred.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a regular status, full-time, benefits-eligible, exempt position.

 

The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm.

 

Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department. Will be required to work some evenings and occasional weekends (e.g. on-call rotation, orientation, and other AARS programs).

 

Salary rate range: $70,304.00-$72,000.00. The salary rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

 

           

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: 

Will supervise student employees.

Ability to see within normal parameters.  Ability to hear within normal parameters.  Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file.  Ability to move about.  Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.
