The Assistant Director, Institutional Research & Analytics provides advanced leadership in data management, analytics, and reporting to support university planning, policy development, institutional effectiveness, and executive decision-making. The role oversees the extraction, validation, and analysis of complex datasets from Ellucian Banner, Oracle, and other enterprise systems to meet state, federal, accreditation, internal, and national reporting requirements. This position enhances institutional research capacity by developing automated reporting solutions, integrating data governance best practices, and ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and strategic use of institutional data.
Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Facilitates, supports, and provides advanced data analytics and reporting to support and inform executive leadership in university planning, policy development, and operational strategies.
- Extracts, transforms, validates, and delivers accurate data for state, federal, accreditation, compliance, and internal reporting needs, as well as national media surveys.
- Designs, develops, and maintains automated reporting workflows using PL/SQL, T-SQL, Banner ODS, Workday, and related data management tools to strengthen institutional effectiveness.
- Enhances institutional research practices through development of dashboards, predictive analytics, data visualizations, and performance metrics supporting PIP staff and other university stakeholders.
- Supports the information and reporting needs of academic colleges, administrative units, and executive leadership through data consultation, custom reports, ad hoc analyses, and technical guidance.
- Serves as a project team member and subject matter expert on enterprise data initiatives,
- including data governance, business process improvement, analytics modernization, and system integrations.
- Ensures data quality by conducting complex validations, longitudinal comparisons, anomaly detection, and automated audit checks across Banner modules and reporting files.
- Facilitates, supports, and informs university planning, policy development, and operational strategies for executive leadership using advanced data analytics and reporting.
Other Duties:
- Develops documentation, data dictionaries, metadata definitions, and reporting protocols to support transparency and data literacy across campus.
- Collaborates with IT, Data Governance, and functional offices (Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid, HR, etc.) to resolve data issues and enhance data pipelines.
- Provides advanced programming support for analytics projects, dashboard development, and enterprise reporting tools.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
- Technical and/or statistical experience in relational databases.
- Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree from an accredited institution in statistics, educational research, higher education administration, business/data analytics, public policy, information systems, or related fields.
- Two years of experience in institutional research, educational analytics, research methodology, data mining, statistical analysis, predictive analytics, or compliance reporting..
- Experience writing complex PL/SQL, and T-SQL including stored procedures, views, packages, and functions.
- Analytical and statistical skills within an institutional research background highly desirable.
- Experience working with Ellucian Banner, including Student, Admissions, Records, Financial Aid, and Degree Works data structures. Workday knowledge.
- Experience improving data quality, managing large datasets, and developing automated reporting pipelines.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles, best practices, and trends within the field of Institutional Research and Effectiveness.
- Advanced knowledge of database design, PL/SQL, T-SQL, data warehousing, ETL workflows, and enterprise reporting environments.
- Ability to learn intricacies of university data systems and reporting protocols.
- Demonstrated skills with a variety of information technologies and relevant experience in higher education, preferably involving institutional research.
- Ability to interpret and apply reporting requirements for state, federal, and institutional compliance.
- Ability to multitask productively and effectively and to work amiably in a team-approach and project oriented environment.
- Exceptional organizational skills for managing multiple data requests, analyses, projects, and deadlines.
- Working knowledge of Ellucian Banner, including table structures, ODS models, and data validation protocols, or the ability to quickly learn and apply these concepts.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based, project-oriented environment with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts into clear, actionable information for various audiences.
- Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
- Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
