Position Overview and Environment

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at The Ohio State University is a dynamic and exciting place to work. This position offers an opportunity to strategically impact the future of Ohio State through the recruitment, admission, and support of outstanding students. The Outreach and Recruitment team in Undergraduate Admissions is responsible for recruiting prospective students to The Ohio State University. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Outreach and Recruitment. The individual will be located in the Student Academic Services Building and will work closely alongside a team of full-time staff members of approximately 30 and a broader Undergraduate Admissions team of 55. Peak seasons are typically August through May given the cyclical nature of the work supported across Undergraduate Admissions. In office or hybrid work hours (3 days in office, 2 days work from home) can range from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, but will require early morning, evening, and weekend hours at various times during the year given the role's direct work with outreach and recruitment programs occurring in varying international time zones.

Detailed Job Description

As a member of the Undergraduate Admissions team the Assistant Director leads a team responsible for the implementation of recruitment strategy through staff. Provides leadership and supervision of up to 3 campus based admissions counselors; employs a comprehensive performance management process including on-going training, setting expectations through performance planning, provides on-going coaching/mentoring and evaluates staff; motivates and encourages staff to help set priorities, provide excellent customer service, and support staff in their own career development; Develops and implements strategy, plans, executes, and evaluates domestic, in-state recruitment and counseling activities with their direct reports; evaluates and manages participation in Ohio based programs for identified markets; assists with assessments of Ohio competitors in designated markets; participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of new outreach and recruitment efforts in collaboration with internal and external partners.

Leads strategic initiatives to support the priorities of the Director of Outreach and Recruitment. Oversees that staff responsible for planning and execution of recruitment and counselor events; assists Associate Director in planning and implementation of events for the Undergraduate Admission Counselor Advisory Board; supports the Director and Associate Director with promoting program participation; manages relationship with select vendors to ensure strategic program participation, develops and implements activities provided by vendors, monitors progress, analyze results; manages the personnel, operational and territory budgets of designated areas; serves in place of the Associate Director at designated meetings and programs.

Manages a recruitment territory (e.g., domestic); Executes territory specific recruitment activities and events in collaboration with partner offices using data, reports and analysis tools/technology. Develops and maintains positive relationships with high schools, community-based organizations, and community colleges. Travels to high schools, community colleges, and college fairs to represent Ohio State. Possible/extensive travel up to 10 -12 weeks per year, potentially 3-4 consistent weeks in a given semester in Ohio and out-of-state. Makes recruitment calls to prospective students in collaboration with partner offices. Analyzes prospective student data. Learns and uses the Empowering Market Analysis (EMA, Ohio State's internal data analyst tool), CRM (Salesforce), Blackthorn (event reservation system), Student Information System, and other technologies to perform timely and accurate entries into databases regarding student application information, call/email activity and other processes, performs data validation. Manages electronic workflows.

Additional responsibilities the Assistant Director will be responsible for include but are not limited to; counsels and corresponds with students, families, university departments, or other stakeholders regarding Ohio State admission policies, procedures, and general information over the phone, via email, and in person. Conducts large and small-group presentations. Learns and maintains knowledge of the areas within the office and university to best direct questions from staff and guests. Researches and resolves problems.

Reviews applications (domestic, international, transfer, special population, special program) and makes admissions recommendations through our holistic application review process that fluctuates through the year.

Assists with on and off campus recruitment events and projects. Participate as an active member of Undergraduate Admissions through membership on committees. Completes special assignments and other duties as assigned. Evening and weekend hours required.

Education/Experience

Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; 5 years experience in undergraduate admissions or related field; Prior supervisory experience of full-time staff; Demonstrated project management experience and leading organization-wide projects; Excellent data-driven decision making and collaboration skills.

Desired: 8-12 years of relevant experience. Experience with CRM (Salesforce) and SIS (Peoplesoft). Strong organizational skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and contribute to a positive work environment; capable to multi-task while juggling competing priorities; demonstrated ability to take instruction and work independently; high degree of attention to detail and self-disciplined time management.

Salary range for this position is $64,900-$84,850. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
