The Assistant Controller oversees the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Finance Department's Financial Reporting functions and provides leadership for Albany Medical Health System's financial reporting activities. The role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant financial statements, supports systemwide reporting initiatives, and partners with leaders across the organization to strengthen financial performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead monthly financial reporting for the Albany and Columbia Memorial campus, including comparing actual results to budget and reconciling variances.
- Review of account reconciliations, monthly expenses and income for unusual or unexpected items and ensure accuracy and integrity of all financial reports.
- Oversee the daily, monthly and annual accounting for cash and long-term investments (non-debt related), including audited footnotes.
- Oversight of all accounting relating to the Albany campus Foundation department.
- Preparation of financial accounting and analysis of Pension and Health Insurance plans.
- Preparation for Albany Medical Health System (AMHS) monthly reporting, including Finance Committee packages, executive reports, and custom analyses.
- Direct the collection, compilation, and submission of IRS and New York State reporting requirements.
- Oversee annual surveys for Foundation, Capital, and Census data.
- Manage preparation and submission of federal and state tax returns, including Group Return, 1098-T, sales tax filings, and 5500s for benefit plans.
- Serve as a key participant in preparing the annual budget for Albany campus.
- Oversee development of projected financial information for the Columbia Memorial campus and preparation of the projected financial information for the Albany Campus.
- Collaborate with Treasury to monitor and prepare cash flow forecasts.
- Provide leadership for General Ledger, Reporting, and Payroll IT system components.
- Mentor team members, develop growth plans, and prepare annual performance appraisals in partnership with Directors.
- Work closely with Department Heads and supervisory personnel across the organization.
- Represent the Finance function with external auditors and the Systemwide Audit & Compliance Committee.
- Review Financial Reporting policies and procedures to ensure compliance, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Lead interpretation and implementation of new FASB guidance and other accounting standards.
- Participate in setting annual and quarterly goals for the Financial Reporting team.
- Complete special projects and analytical reports as assigned by the Controller and Vice Presidents of Finance or CFO.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting - required
- Master's Degree in Accounting - preferred
- 4-6 years of related experience - required
- 4-6 years in Public Accounting - required
- 4-6 years of prior supervisory experience - required
- Strong knowledge of FASB and AICPA publications. (High proficiency)
- Strong technology and computer skills. (High proficiency)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. (High proficiency)
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. (High proficiency)
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Upon Hire - required
