Essential Functions:
Coaches and demonstrates techniques to team members individually and in groups. Manages designated skill development areas or groups of positions. Develops and recommends strategy and teaches theoretical skills.
Plans, coordinates, and supervises student athlete practice sessions for men’s and women’s distance runners during cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track and field seasons.
Teaches one to two Physical Education courses annually as required for student graduation criteria. May stand in as needed when requested by Head Coach or Director of Physical Education.
Recruits quality prospective student-athletes and ensures timely submission of their academic records for admissions.
Serves as a meet coordinator for the Washington & Lee University Track & Field Carnival and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Track & Field Championships.
Communicates effectively with head coaches, administration, and peers about program goals, status, and needs.
Complies with all University, ODAC Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
Supports planning team travel logistics, which could include lodging, transportation, and meal arrangements, in accordance with budgetary parameters for the cross-country and track & field programs.
Other duties as assigned by the head coaching staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree and collegiate competitive experience in cross country or track & field distance events is required, while a master's degree and coaching experience with the mid-distance, distance, or steeplechase events are preferred.
Must be committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship on and off the playing field.
Role models appropriate behavior and conduct to support the image and reputation of the athletics program.
Strong understanding of various coaching techniques and a willingness to learn new methods of instruction.
Must possess a valid driver's license.

Campus Safety and Welfare Responsibilities:
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) in accordance with the Clery Act. This position is required to report Clery qualifying crimes to the Department of Public Safety and complete annual training about your reporting responsibilities under the law.
Physical Requirements:

Working Conditions: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
