The Provo City Legal Department is looking for an attorney to serve as part-time legal counsel, with both civil and criminal duties. This position requires knowledge of principles and practices of civil law and criminal prosecution.

What is the compensation?

Pay Rate: $44.62 - $55.00 per hour (depending on qualifications)

What are the main duties?

  • Review assigned cases for civil action or probable cause; prosecute misdemeanors and infractions.

  • Review complaints, statements, police reports, and written subpoenas; authorize issuance of complaints or information; draft ordinances and other documents.

  • Coordinate efforts with various law enforcement agencies, government agencies, the public, attorneys, and other office staff.

  • Represent the City in court and at hearings.

  • Prepare pleadings, motions, orders, and other papers including briefs and memorandums for appeal proceedings.

  • File legal documents and papers.

  • May assist in more difficult civil or criminal legal work and in processing collections work.

  • Assist office staff as needed and perform other related duties as required.

What are the minimum requirements?

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.

  • Valid, lawful Driver License.

  • Must maintain active membership in the Utah State Bar Association, including admission to practice before all state courts, and when required by the City Attorney, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.

What are the hours?

Up to 25 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, during business hours (7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.). Periodic evening work may be required. Schedule to be discussed during interview.

What are the physical and environmental factors?

This position requires sitting at a computer and maintaining concentrated attention to detail for long periods. It requires court appearances and depositions in public and private buildings and exposure to stressful situations including strict deadlines, broad objectives, and dealing with individuals in highly emotional states. Work is performed inside an environmentally controlled building. May be exposed to unknown, dangerous, and/or hostile conditions.

What is the selection process?

This position is open until filled and will be closed when sufficient, qualified applications to proceed with a competitive selection process have been received (at least seven days). Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
