About the Role

Our dynamic, customer facing Independent Nuclear Assurance (INA) team provides independent safety assessment and advice in support of both in-service and future designs of Naval Reactor Plant (NRP).  The team has detailed knowledge and extensive experience of naval nuclear safety cases and works collaboratively with MoD’s Nuclear Propulsion Delivery Team (NPDT) and their Technical Authorities to ensure that Defence Nuclear Enterprise requirements are met.

We are seeking experienced personnel to work within this complex, challenging and important programme.  Specifically, we are looking to appoint an Assistant Chief Technologist to support and deputise for the INA Chief Technologist.

What you will be doing

Using your knowledge and experience to assist the INA Chief Technologist in the following areas:

  • Maintaining the quality of technical and safety assurance through governance and oversight.

  • Specifying assurance standards and expectations taking account of relevant programme and safety and technical developments.

  • Setting the standards for the quality of delivered outputs ensuring that they are authoritative, value adding, balanced and proportionate.

  • Maintaining arrangements so that INA services are informed, impartial and independent.

  • Reviewing NSQEP requirements and overseeing training strategies.

  • Promoting consistent ways of working across the Nuclear Propulsion Independent (NPIA) Assurance contract.

  • Acting as a consultant to NPDT, when requested, on relevant safety and technical issues and methods of working.

  • Maintaining an overview of significant safety, technical and programme matters and advising NPDT on their resolution.

  • Representing the INA Chief Technologist at meetings with NPDT and their contractors.

  • Working with AT&R Operation Managers and Chief Engineers to provide Technical Leadership across the NPIA contract, promoting a positive culture aligned to the business and programme needs.

  • Building and maintaining relationships at a strategic level with NPDT and their contractors.

  • Driving change programmes across the NPIA contract to ensure INA services are fit for the future and demonstrably aligned to the strategic programme requirements for simplification, collaboration and innovation.

  • Working in accordance with business requirements for health, safety, environment, and security.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Degree (Level 6, minimum requirement) in science or engineering.

  • Membership of a professional institution is desirable.

  • Detailed design knowledge or operational experience of the Naval Reactor Plant through attainment of Naval Nuclear qualifications (eg NSSC, NPWSC or equivalent).

  • Knowledge of safety case structures and staged safety case campaigns (PSRs, PCSRs etc).

  • Good working knowledge of related documentation (NRPA NSMAs, DSA02-DNSR, ONR SAPs etc).

  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to speak with authority across a wide range of Naval Nuclear Propulsion related topics at a senior level and with subject matter experts from a range of technical disciplines to provide professional, independent challenge or advice.

  • This role will a require security clearance; therefore, applicants should be of UK Nationality only, hold or be willing to obtain security clearance in the UK.
