Assistant Chief EngineerJob Description Summary
Responsible for ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems throughout the assigned facility, including Data Center and Lab environments. This role ensures all operational and maintenance tasks are completed to maximize system reliability and equipment lifespan. In many cases, this position operates without an on-site Chief Engineer and may serve as the sole engineer for the building. Depending on site size and complexity, this role may also oversee and direct maintenance staff.Job Description
· Assist with or perform daily operations and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, along with general building maintenance tasks.
· MOP Preparation Write, review, and execute Method of Procedure (MOPs) for all maintenance and project activities. Ensure all procedures meet safety standards, reduce operational risk, and comply with company requirements.
· Capacity Planning Monitor power, cooling, and space capacity within the data center and Lab environments Review and approve new load additions to maintain system reliability and prevent electrical or mechanical overload. Track capacity trends and assist in planning for system expansions or upgrades.
· Supervise maintenance staff when applicable and assign or monitor maintenance activities and projects
· Perform preventive maintenance tasks, including replacing filters, lubricating motors, changing lamps/ballasts/fixtures, inspecting belts, replacing motor bearings, aligning shafts, and completing all manufacturer-recommended maintenance
· Recommend ongoing improvements to the preventive maintenance program
· Coordinate maintenance activities with outside contractors and technicians
· Respond promptly to emergencies (fire, evacuation, equipment failure, etc.) and tenant/customer concerns
· Comply with all relevant codes, regulations, and company directives while following safe work practices
· Keep management informed of building operations by preparing and submitting monthly reports
· Complete all required C&W Safety Training annually
· Follow C&W Uniform Dress Code and maintain a professional appearance on property

IMPORTANT EDUCATION • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
Graduate of an apprentice program or trade school preferred
IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE
3–5 years of experience working with data center or critical-facility MEP systems.
Trade certification or license preferred (Electrical, HVAC, Mechanical, etc.).
Strong knowledge of UPS systems, standby generators, switchgear, PDUs, HVAC systems, and BMS/EMS controls.
Experience writing or executing MOPs and JSAs.
EPA 608 Universal Certification preferred.
Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel).
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
• Applicable trade licenses or permits, such as Journeyman/Master Electrician, City Licenses, Operator Licenses, Steam Engineer License, etc.
• Valid “Universal” EPA Section 608 certification for CFC/HFC refrigerants
• Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record with periodic checks
• Basic computer proficiency in Outlook, Excel, and Word
• Experience with operation, maintenance, and basic repair of HVAC systems, boilers, heaters, pumps, refrigerant systems, compressors, and water systems
• Knowledge of energy management systems, operations, and techniques
• Strong understanding of building systems operations, maintenance, and repair
May be the only maintenance staff member on duty during certain shifts; may be required to work extended hours during priority or emergency situations; may require shift work and/or on-call duties
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role operates in a professional office and facility environment. Regular use of computers, phones, photocopiers, filing systems, and related office equipment is expected. Frequent travel between properties may be required in varying weather conditions.

• Ability to stoop, stand, climb, and regularly lift at least 50 lbs. (tools, pumps, ladders, equipment) and safely use rigging/lifting devices
• Regular need to crouch or reach to install/move equipment by bending at the waist or knees
• Frequent movement between buildings, floors, and departments
• Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively
• Ability to read and understand written and verbal information
• Ability to read printed materials, schematics, and drawings
