Job Summary: The Assistant Auditor General serves as a key leader within the Air Force Audit Agency (AFAA), responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight of internal audit operations. The Auditor General of the Department of the Air Force directs the internal audit mission of the DAF through the Air Force Audit Agency. The AFAA plans and executes performance audits and audit related support complying with published standards and the law.

Major Duties:

  • Two (2) positions will be filled from this announcement. Please ensure you indicate which location(s) for which you wish to be considered. The DAF will determine the best applicant for each location as part of the SES mobility program. MAJOR DUTIES: The Assistant Auditor General serves as a key leader within the Air Force Audit Agency (AFAA), responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight of internal audit operations. The incumbent will lead a diverse team of professionals in executing a comprehensive audit program, ensuring compliance with professional standards, and providing expert advice to senior leadership to enhance agency effectiveness and accountability. The incumbent will: Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for a portfolio of audit activities, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities. Direct the planning, execution, and reporting of a wide range of audits in accordance with Government Auditing Standards and agency policies. Develop and implement audit policies, procedures, and methodologies to ensure the quality and effectiveness of audit services. Lead and manage a diverse workforce of audit professionals, including recruitment, development, and performance management, to foster a high-performing and inclusive environment. Serve as a principal advisor to the Auditor General and other senior leaders on audit-related matters, providing expert analysis and recommendations on complex issues. Represent the agency and build collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including senior officials within the Department of the Air Force, Department of War, and other government agencies. Manage and allocate human and financial resources to optimize the efficiency and impact of audit operations.

Qualifications: Eligibility will be based upon a clear showing the applicant has education, training, and experience of the scope and quality sufficient to effectively carry-out the duties of the position. Candidates must exemplify the corporate perspective, leadership vision, broad experience and character needed in the SES corps not only to satisfy the immediate vacancy, but future vacancies which will occur in a variety of organizations, functions and locations. In accordance with new OPM requirements to streamline Senior Executive Service (SES) hiring, applicants are no longer required to submit lengthy narrative essays, including those for Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) or Mandatory Technical Qualifications (TQs), when applying. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Your resume should demonstrate possession of the following education requirements. a. Degree: accounting, auditing; or a degree including auditing courses in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting. The 24 hours may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law. OR b. Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in accounting, or an equivalent combination of accounting experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional accounting knowledge. The applicant's background must also include one of the following: Twenty-four semester hours in accounting or auditing courses of appropriate type and quality. This can include up to 6 hours of business law; A certificate as Certified Public Accountant or a Certified Internal Auditor, obtained through written examination; or Completion of the requirements for a degree that included substantial course work in accounting or auditing, e.g., 15 semester hours, but that does not fully satisfy the 24-semester-hour requirement of paragraph A, provided that (a) the applicant has successfully worked at the full-performance level in accounting, auditing, or a related field, e.g., valuation engineering or financial institution examining; (b) a panel of at least two higher level professional accountants or auditors has determined that the applicant has demonstrated a good knowledge of accounting and of related and underlying fields that equals in breadth, depth, currency, and level of advancement that which is normally associated with successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in paragraph A; and (c) except for literal nonconformance to the requirement of 24 semester hours in accounting, the applicant's education, training, and experience fully meet the specified requirements. TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (TQs): Your resume should demonstrate accomplishments that satisfy the technical qualifications. TQ1. Demonstrated expertise leading and executing internal audits, financial operations, and financial improvement/audit remediation activities within a complex organization. Possession of a deep understanding of professional auditing standards and principles, complemented by in-depth knowledge of related fields like management analysis, statistics, and financial management/reporting. TQ2. Proven ability to lead and manage human, financial, and technological resources to achieve strategic organizational goals. This includes extensive experience managing teams across diverse stakeholder groups, such as senior leadership and field components, while leveraging technology and data to drive results.
