POSITION TITLE: Assistant Athletic DirectorPOSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Athletic Director oversees all athletic programs in partnership with the Director of Athletics at Joliet Junior College; providing day-to-day leadership and operational support for the Director of Athletics and the Athletic Department. The Assistant Athletic Director provides leadership, oversight, and operational support to the Athletic Department while serving as a strong student advocate. This role champions the mission and goals of the Student Development Division by promoting student success, equity, and holistic development for all student-athletes.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide day-to-day leadership, coordination, and administrative support to the Director of Athletics and the Athletic Department. Assist in the execution of departmental priorities, strategic initiatives, and daily operations to ensure efficiency, compliance, and alignment with institutional goals. Serve as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, helping to facilitate communication, resolve issues, and support a student-centered athletic environment.
2. Oversee all transportation needs for athletic teams, including coordination of rental vehicles and institutional fleet usage in collaboration with Athletic Department staff. Track, document, and report transportation expenses for both regular season and postseason travel, ensuring accuracy, cost-efficiency, and compliance with institutional policies.
3. Provide comprehensive oversight of all athletic department transportation operations, including the maintenance, safety, and utilization of institutional vehicles. Ensure all vehicles are properly inspected, serviced, and compliant with college policies and safety regulations. Supervise and provide guidance to all staff authorized to operate institutional vehicles, including verification of driver eligibility, training, and adherence to risk management protocols
4. Oversee the scheduling and coordination of athletic facilities for both internal and external use through the college’s scheduling system. Ensure equitable and strategic allocation of space that supports academic, athletic, and community priorities while minimizing scheduling conflicts.
5. Develop, maintain, and monitor contractual agreements for internal and external facility rentals. Ensure all agreements are accurate, compliant with institutional policies, and reflective of appropriate fees, terms, and liability requirements.
6. Coordinate comprehensive game-day schedules, including facility preparation, event timelines, and staffing plans. Assess and verify staffing needs to ensure adequate coverage for operations, security, game management, and guest services.
7. Represent the Athletic Department by attending home and away athletic events, or serve in a supporting role to the Director of Athletics as assigned. Assist with event oversight, ensure adherence to institutional and conference standards, and provide on-site leadership to address operational needs, student-athlete support, and game management responsibilities.
8. Support the Director of Athletics in fostering community engagement and developing strategic partnerships that enhance the visibility and impact of the Athletic Department. Provide leadership in cultivating relationships with community organizations, sponsors, and stakeholders, and assist in coordinating outreach initiatives, events, and collaborative opportunities that align with institutional goals and promote student-athlete success.
9. Participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, and other professional development opportunities relevant to athletics administration and assigned areas of responsibility, as approved by the Director of Athletics. Engage in ongoing learning to remain current with industry trends, compliance standards, and best practices. Actively contribute to departmental and institutional initiatives by participating in retreats, committees, trainings, and other college-wide activities that support collaboration, professional growth, and alignment with institutional priorities.
10. Potential to serve in a coaching role based on performance and approval by Director of Athletics
11. Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a focus on education, sports management or a related field.
2. Two (2) years of experience in a college athletic department.
3. Valid Driver’s License.
4. Management experience directing and supervising the work of others.
5. Marketing experience in promotion of Athletic programs.
6. Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with students and staff and work cooperatively with a diverse population.
7. Excellent organizational, administrative, financial management, oral and written communication, and effective leadership skills.
8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
9. Demonstrated commitment to the college’s core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Higher Education experience; preferably college experience.
2. Successful coaching experience at the collegiate or comparable level.
3. Computer experience and technology skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office.
4. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
5. Demonstrated multicultural competence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Normal office physical demands.
2. Ability to travel between campus locations and to and from community events.
3. Ability to travel in state and nationally.
4. The employee is often required to stand, walk, run, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
5. Ability to occasionally lift, carry, and/or drag approximately 50 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Duties are performed indoors and outdoors daily, as weather conditions permit, in the athletics environment.
2. Noise level can be moderate to loud.
