PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Are you tired of feeling like a fish out of water 🐠 in your current career? If you’re treading water in terms of boredom, maybe it’s time to dive into something new 🌊. The City of Aurora is continually seeking enthusiastic Aqua Fitness Instructors ready to make a serious splash.

We’re not just looking for someone who can swim; we need a natural leader. Think of the pool as your personal amphitheater 🎶. You are the maestro 🧑‍ leading a group of individuals while leading exercises, conducting a liquid orchestra of safe, dynamic movement.

This role is perfect if you are comfortable and confident standing up front. You’ll be responsible for specialized aquatic fitness instruction. Your main duty is overseeing the safety of patrons while instructing a constructive water-fitness class. Our classes vary, covering everything from general water fitness and arthritis programs to deep-water fitness and even Paddleboard fitness 🏄‍♀️. This job announcement is to collect applications from candidates for current and future Aquatics Fitness Instructor positions. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified, and their qualifications match the position's requirements.

Hiring Salary is $22.00/hour. 

Must be 18 at the time of hire.

The hours for this role range from 2 to 10 hours.

This position is classified as a VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), meaning the selected candidate will work fewer than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. 

Position overview -

The Aquatics Fitness Instructor performs variety of routine tasks related to specialized aquatic fitness instruction.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for overseeing the safety of water fitness patrons while instructing a dynamic, safe, and constructive water fitness class
  • Sets up and tears down equipment for classes
  • Prepares lesson plans for each class
  • Monitor Participants and is attentive and alert while instructing
  • Provides a safe environment
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: 

  • High School Diploma or GED. 

Experience: 

  • None

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Accredited national water fitness certification.
  • Standard first aid and CPR certification.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of pool safety and emergency action plans.
  • Knowledge of different aqua fitness techniques and styles, i.e. deep water fitness, arthritis classes, etc.

Skills: 

  • Skill in water fitness techniques and emergency response.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Basic teaching skills

Abilities: 

  • Recognition of safety concerns
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Adherence to class format

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 25 pounds; regular walking and standing; regular climbing, bending, kneeling, and crouching; hand/foot/eye coordination to perform and demonstrate appropriate fitness skills; vision to read instructions; hearing and speech communication for communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, water, and other conditions found in an aquatic environment.

Equipment Used:

  • Operates equipment related to aquatic fitness classes such as pool noodles, weights, and floatation belts.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
