MAIN OBJECTIVES

Programme of learning will consist of 2 years day release to study the Level 3 EAL Diploma in Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technologies (EMST) knowledge qualification. This study path is combined with workplace learning. 

When at work the technician will be employed in Manufacturing to support the application of learning from college and enable the gathering of evidence of learning and application for completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering – Technical Support Technician (development competence) qualification. The objective at the end of the 42-month programme is qualification and permanent employment as Test and Repair Technician. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diligent application to study the EMST route on day release and within company time to achieve a successful outcome with qualification.

  • Diligent application of learning in the workplace to demonstrate the learning and knowledge gained.

  • Attending regular monitoring review meetings with appointed training officer.

  • Gathering a portfolio of on the job learning and work evidence to meet the needs of the apprenticeship programme and End-point Assessment.

  • Satisfactorily completing assignments and consolidating the training and work undertaken in the time frame agreed.

  • Manufacture (Assembly & Test) of production units as a primary role with rotation in other company departments throughout the apprenticeship programme

  • Applying a conscientious attitude in the workplace, contributing to the departmental goals and objectives.

  • Ensure familiarisation and adherence to the Quality, Environmental and Health and Safety management systems including workmanship standards, static handling precautions and high voltage control measures.

  • Keep informed and support EMS and improvement team activities and IS09001 - Quality and ISO 14001- Environmental requirements including lean initiatives.

  • Work with other team members to continuously improve quality and processes.

  • Responsibility for adhering to the Company’s ISO 9001 Quality, ISO14001 Environmental and Health and Safety management systems.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of four GCSE’s at grades A-C or 4-9 including Mathematics, English and a Science.

  • Ability to achieve pass marks in initial apprenticeship assessment process including mechanical reasoning, IT, numerical reasoning, communication, area space relationships, understanding electrical principles and principles of measurement.

  • A thorough and methodical approach to problem solving. 

  • Self-motivated. 

  • Computer literate. 

  • A quick learner and logical thinker.  

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.  

  • A keen interest in engineering design and manufacturing.

Working conditions 

  • Manufacturing shopfloor.

  • The role includes the use of PPE where appropriate e.g. safety shoes, eyewear, gloves. 

  • Use of hand tools and solder irons.

  • Operation and repair of High Voltage Power supplies.

  • Regular lifting and movement of materials up to 30kg (with use of mechanical aids where applicable) in accordance with risk assessment and safe working practices.
