Job Summary
The MongoDB Application DBA is an application-centric role, acting as the bridge between the application development team and the central MaaS platform team. You will be the primary owner of the application's data tier, responsible for all aspects of data modeling, schema design, query performance, and indexing. Unlike a platform DBA, your focus is not on managing the infrastructure, but on leveraging the self-service MaaS platform to build and maintain a highly performant and scalable database layer for your application. You will be embedded with the development team, providing expert guidance throughout the development lifecycle and ensuring the application makes optimal use of MongoDB.
Key Responsibilities
Data Modeling & Schema Design
- Lead the design and implementation of data models and database schemas that are optimized for performance, scalability, and the specific needs of the application.
- Advise developers on best practices for document structure, embedding vs. referencing, and polymorphism.
- Design and implement effective shard key strategies for large-scale datasets, working within the MaaS self-service framework to enable sharding.
- Ensure all schema designs adhere to the governance and operational standards of the MaaS platform.
Performance Tuning & Query Optimization
- Proactively identify and resolve application-related performance issues.
- Perform in-depth query analysis using explain() plans and Ops Manager metrics to identify slow queries and inefficient database operations.
- Design, create, and manage all application-level indexes, including TTL indexes for automated data purging and compound indexes for complex query patterns.
- Work directly with developers to refactor and optimize application code that interacts with MongoDB.
- Monitor the application's replication oplog window and advise on workload adjustments or oplog resizing to maintain platform health.
Application Development & Lifecycle Support
- Act as the primary database subject matter expert within the agile development team.
- Guide the development team on the correct use of MongoDB drivers, including the implementation of retryable reads and writes for application resilience.
- Assist in all phases of the development and testing lifecycle, including performance testing, end-to-end testing in UAT, and validating database changes.
- Manage database schema changes and data migrations as part of the application's CI/CD pipeline.
Collaboration & Platform Consumption
- Serve as the main liaison between the application team and the central MaaS platform team.
- Utilize the MaaS self-service portal to manage the application's database clusters, including provisioning, resizing, and initiating sharding.
- Coordinate with the MaaS team for activities that require platform-level intervention, such as disaster recovery tests or complex resizing operations, by raising the appropriate ServiceNow change requests.
- Ensure the application is compliant with all MaaS platform requirements for go-live, including licensing, CSI inventory status, and monitoring setup.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 8-12 years of database experience, with at least 5-7 years in an application-focused MongoDB DBA or development role.
- Data Modeling: Proven, extensive experience in data modeling and schema design for a variety of application workloads in MongoDB.
- Performance Tuning: Expert-level skills in MongoDB query optimization, index tuning, and performance troubleshooting from an application perspective.
- MongoDB Architecture: Strong understanding of MongoDB core concepts, including replica sets, sharding, and read/write concerns, from the perspective of an application developer/DBA.
- Collaboration: Demonstrated experience working embedded within an application development team.
- Problem Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex issues spanning application code and database configuration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Financial Services: Prior experience working within a large, global financial institution is highly desirable.
- Development Background: Experience as a software developer who has worked extensively with MongoDB.
- DBaaS Environments: Experience working with a self-service Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) model.
- ITSM/Change Management: Familiarity with formal IT Service Management (ITSM) processes and tools, particularly ServiceNow.
- MongoDB Drivers: Deep knowledge of the intricacies of various MongoDB drivers and their configuration options.
- CI/CD: Experience integrating database changes into automated CI/CD pipelines.
