Our Antimicrobial Stewardship Program is growing! Come join us as part of an Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS) system team at Beth Israel Lahey Health with a full-time position based at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, MA. This position is the fourth step in the four-level career ladder from Novice to Expert and reports to the system Director, Antimicrobial Stewardship. This pharmacist will join three other inpatient antimicrobial pharmacists and medical director on site as well as several other AS pharmacy specialists across our system. This position will help support the goals for AS at our largest academic medical center.Job Description:
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Practices pharmacy with a focus on antimicrobial management in accordance with the laws, rules and regulation of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire Boards of Pharmacy, Departments of Public Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Maintains certification and credentials in accordance with the Board of Pharmacy and submits proof annually.
2. Works with infectious disease (ID) consult and primary teams on in person and telehealth initiatives. Under the direction of the AS Directors, assumes responsibility for daily team-based activities. Based on scheduling across the team, assists the Director in prioritizing and/or consolidating services and assignments of the AS team across pre-prescriptive approval reviews, post-prescriptive review and feedback, clinical decision support alert review relative to drug duplication, bug-drug mismatches, therapeutic drug monitoring and intravenous to oral conversions.
3. Reviews the reports from ASP3 on a weekly basis summarizing potential problem areas identified by ASP1-2 in order to prioritize targeted interventions relative to anti-infective medication orders or utilization.
4. Runs quality analytics on a monthly basis relative to activities of the ASP 1-3 based on interventions and provides feedback in partnership with the Director, AS.
5. Summarizes patient safety events on a monthly basis, responding to requests for case review, helping to propose solutions through training, computer alerts or other modalities and shares results with AS Directors and local institutional leadership, as appropriate.
6. Works with AS Directors to develop plans for implementation of educational programs for multidisciplinary staff at local and system level. Participates in development of prescriber and healthcare personnel education.
7. Serves as content expert on implementation and education related to clinical decision trees, guided decision making, EHR order questions, and antibiotic utilization and resistance tracking and reporting to the National Health Safety Network (NHSN) for specific units and the local institution. Assists with this work at the system level as directed by AS leadership.
8. Establishes processes to evaluate the cost effectiveness and quality of service-related clinical operations endeavors (e.g., formulary restrictions, collaborative practice models for pharmacist-driven protocols, laboratory diagnostics). Uses this information to track, analyze and provide summaries for quality metrics on adherence and outcomes.
9. Demonstrates good judgment and maintains strict adherence to BILH confidentiality guidelines and always maintains compliance with HIPAA.
10. Additional duties may be assigned based on individual skills and competencies within specific areas of AS (e.g., data analysis of dosing by indication, duration by diagnosis, diagnostic test recommendations). Support coverage of AS activities at other BILH facilities as necessary and determined by BILH AS executive leadership.
Qualifications/Skills & Knowledge Requirements
Required Qualifications
1. Doctoral degree in Pharmacy (PharmD) required.
2. License to practice as Pharmacist in Massachusetts or New Hampshire depending on work location.
3. Completion of PGY 2 Pharmacy Residency in Infectious Diseases plus at least 5 years’ experience, or at least 8-10 years of experience in AS and Infectious Diseases inpatient practice.
4. Board Certification in Infectious Diseases Practice.
5. Certification in Antimicrobial Stewardship from a national accrediting provider- Society of ID Pharmacists, Infectious Diseases Society of America, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
6. Detail oriented, critical thinker, effective communicator with analytical abilities and strong interpersonal skills.Advanced skills with computer systems required, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office suite applications.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience in use of electronic health record, particularly Epic, including antimicrobial stewardship tools and/or other related software preferred.
2. Experience in data analysis and/or data visualization; advanced degree in related field (e.g., MPH, Masters’ in Epidemiology or Statistics) a plus.
3. Knowledge and/or experience in related fields such as infection prevention, public health and quality improvement.
4. Experience in antibiogram development and management, rapid diagnostics and cascading rules in collaboration with Microbiology.
Pay Range:
$65.02 USD - $87.50 USDThe pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
