This individual will be a faculty member in the Department of Anesthesiology and will report directly to the Vice Chairman, or his designee. This individual will be an expert on translational development of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) based therapeutics for treating serious chronic neurological disorders. A focus on nonopioid chronic pain therapeutics research and therapeutic candidate development are highly preferred. The hiring rank will be based on experience and current/past level of research funding.

The individual job description will include the following:

Develop competitive research projects and design and submit timely competitive research-oriented grants and contracts to funding agencies.  It is expected that the successful candidate will have a track record of obtaining research funding in scientific disciplines (clinical, basic sciences, or both) relevant to the Department and successfully obtain substantial research support for his/her own projects within three years.

This individual will be an excellent communicator in writing and spoken English.

Represent the Department at various international, national, state and local meetings, and make professional presentations to students, colleagues, support groups and community groups.

Publish research findings in top refereed journals, book chapters, and books.

The individual will work with faculty and staff to assist other investigators in their career development and obtain research funding within the Department and from other disciplines.

Developing and teach relevant courses in the Department of Anesthesiology as assigned by the Department Chair, or their designee.

Participating in the development and mentoring of residents, fellows, students and faculty in the capacity of advisor.

Participate in external, institutional and Departmental committees.

The Department of Anesthesiology is in need of a faculty member to work within the Division of Translational Research. The Division is engaged in interdisciplinary translational research programs spanning bench-to-bedside developing gene therapies for chronic neurological conditions with substantial ongoing NIH support. This position is open at the assistant/associate/full professor level. The appointment will depend on the candidates training and experience. This role requires the candidate to possess broad training in Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) gene therapy, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, as well as animal models of human disease. The incumbent will participate in ongoing gene therapy programs and carry out independent funded research projects. These projects should be relevant to translational development of HSV-based therapeutics for treating serious chronic neurological disorders in support of the Department’s long-term research mission.

The successful candidate is expected to have extramural research funding and/or the ability to develop competitive research projects and design and submit timely competitive research-oriented grants and contracts to funding agencies. In addition, the candidate must be capable of participating in team science and interactions with multiple departments and institutions as well as train and support technicians, students, fellows, and faculty. This Faculty member will also mentor faculty, fellows, residents, and represent the Department at various national, state and local meetings, publish research findings, and develop and teach courses within the Department. 

The incumbent will have a PhD; and/or MD; and/or DVM with a minimum of 3+ years of relevant professional experience.
