PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Manager, Anesthesia is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and activities of the Anesthesia Technologist in accordance with standards established by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). The role requires the ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise all departmental functions, including airway management and ventilation support, management of fluids and blood components, anesthesia-related pharmacology and pathophysiology support, anesthesia equipment preparation, utilization of biotechnology and patient monitoring systems, and supply and inventory management. The manager ensures compliance with ChristianaCare policies, regulatory standards, and unit-level procedures while actively participating in departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives. Additionally, the Manager plans, organizes, and directs the work of anesthesia technical personnel to support physicians and CRNAs in the safe and effective delivery of anesthesia care and high-quality patient outcomes.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee daily operations of the Anesthesia Technology Department, ensuring efficient clinical and technical support for anesthesia services.
- Develop and manage staff schedules to maintain appropriate coverage for anesthesia services across all shifts.
- Ensure departmental operations align with budget targets, operational goals, and cost-effective resource utilization.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, retention, and performance management of anesthesia technologists and technicians.
- Coordinate staff orientation, continuing education, and competency validation, including probationary and annual assessments.
- Maintain operational readiness of anesthesia equipment, supplies, and the clinical environment.
- Perform and oversee quality control, testing, troubleshooting, and alarm response for anesthesia machines and related equipment.
- Collaborate with anesthesia leadership, medical staff, perioperative leaders, and administrative teams to support efficient operations.
- Monitor compliance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and internal departmental procedures.
- Manage caregiver scheduling, daily assignments, and time-off requests to ensure staffing coverage.
- Conduct operational huddles and coordinate education and training initiatives with the Nursing Professional Development Specialist (NPDS) and education leadership.
- Support the Department of Anesthesia Chair, site directors, and anesthesia providers to facilitate clinical workflow and service delivery.
- Develop and monitor departmental operating and capital budgets in collaboration with perioperative business leadership.
- Oversee procurement, inventory management, and standardization of anesthesia supplies and equipment.
- Maintain policies and procedures related to anesthesia technician services, equipment preparation, and supply management.
- Ensure regulatory and accreditation readiness at the unit level.
- Maintain documentation related to equipment requisition, maintenance, and repair.
- Lead departmental performance improvement initiatives.
- Provide operational support to the Operating Room, Heart and Vascular Interventional Services (HVIS), Labor and Delivery, and other procedural areas requiring anesthesia services.

Frequent contact with nursing staff, patients, families, visitors, medical/dental staff, ancillary staff, students, community agencies, vendors, staff from other hospitals, and public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Associate’s degree in a healthcare-related field (e.g., Anesthesia Technology, Respiratory Therapy, or Health Sciences); bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of leadership or supervisory experience in a healthcare environment.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, high-acuity setting such as a Level I trauma center.
- Proficiency with inventory management systems (e.g., PeopleSoft or similar enterprise systems).
- Completion of an accredited anesthesia technician training program and certification as a Cer.A.T. or Cer.A.T.T., or eligibility through the Practical Experience Pathway administered by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT).preferred or must be completed within one year.
- Demonstrated leadership or management training in areas such as team development, communication, and conflict resolution.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced certifications such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, lift, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, and climb as per unit based physical demands checklist.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Frequent exposure to biological and environmental elements with occasional exposure to chemical elements as per unit-based Physical Demands Checklist.
Annual Compensation Range $63,107.20 - $100,984.00
This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare’s good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
