Responsible for end-to-end management of transportation loss and damage claims, including shortage, overage, pilferage, and damage exceptions. This role ensures accurate determination of carrier and vendor liability, timely filing and collection of claims, financial reconciliation, and proactive trend analysis to reduce future losses. The role partners closely with Transportation Service Providers, Distribution Centers, Stores, Accounts Payable, and internal business teams to protect company assets and ensure contractual compliance.
• Research and resolve transportation shortage, overage, pilferage, and damage claims by analyzing receiving documents, carrier contracts, and system data.
• Determine carrier versus vendor liability in accordance with transportation contracts and company policies.
• Prepare, file, and document carrier claims accurately and within contractual timelines.
• Manage claims lifecycle including follow-up, dispute resolution, settlement negotiations, and write-offs.
• Communicate with Transportation Service Providers to ensure timely acknowledgements and payments.
• Analyze claims data to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for loss reduction.
• Reconcile claims databases and claims receivable accounts to the General Ledger.
• Resolve Freight On Hand notices by coordinating with carriers and internal partners to ensure timely disposition of freight.
• Partner with Accounts Payable to resolve posting, payment, and exception issues.
• Support audits, financial reporting, and special analytical projects related to transportation claims.
• Provide guidance to internal teams and carriers on contract interpretation and claims best practices.
• Develop strong cross-functional relationships to improve documentation quality and reduce denied claims.
Utilize and maintain data accuracy across transportation and financial systems including SAP, claims management databases, reporting tools, and Excel-based analytics.
Reports to the Manager, Transportation Claims. Works closely with Transportation Operations, Distribution Centers, Stores, Accounts Payable, General Accounting, Asset Protection, Risk Management, Vendors, and Transportation Service Providers.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Supply Chain, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in Transportation/Freight Claims, Accounts Receivable, or logistics finance.
• Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
• Proven ability to interpret and apply carrier contracts and liability rules.
• Advanced Excel skills; experience with Power BI or data visualization tools preferred.
• Working knowledge of SAP and transportation management systems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail with ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Strong stakeholder management and collaboration skills.
• Prior experience supporting large-scale distribution or retail networks.
• Experience with claims negotiations and settlement strategies.
• Exposure to data analytics, reporting automation, or process improvement initiatives.
